Here's a lovely version, that claims to be recorded in North Korea. I'm making assumptions above my station but I think it demonstrates the concept of familial and romantic love openly without the state nosing into the family. I don't speak Korean to any real extent so anyone with actual Korean skills please correct my interpretation but I think this is pretty propaganda-free? It mentions NK icon Mt Baektu but that's true of most versions I think.

Like somebody else said further down the thread, it's very possible the trauma of the famine permanently affected her ability to experience normal emotions. Or a language/literacy issue. Or she could be lying for cash.

i watched a talk by yeonmi in geneva a few years ago and she was extremely softly spoken, they were constantly turning up the microphone because she kept talking quieter and quieter. she’s a very traumatised person, who’s english is based upon mass media, rather than from a teacher or a efl course. that english is getting better though, and she’s getting louder, but unfortunately i think she’s getting louder faster than her english is getting better.

in order to live wasn’t written by yeonmi though, that’s what you have to remember. it was ghostwritten by maryanne vollers, who, as we see with a fair number of her books, can exaggerate or piece together a story by what she thinks sounds better than rather how it actually happened. it happened with spare as well.

while time remains is an extremely based book. i’m a lover of anything NK related so read it the day it came out and she really points out how the left sound just like NK propaganda, just replace imperialist dogs with conservatives and you’ve got a lot of leftist dog whistles. it’s a common theme amongst NK defectors.

the plastic surgery is probably purely down to her sex trafficking. it’s extremely common amongst victims of sex crimes because they want to remove who they were and look completely different so they don’t feel connected to that person who was a victim.

when yeonmi first came to attention, she was extremely skinny and frail, but the moment she started to actually get some meat on her bones everyone called her fat and critiqued her for wearing makeup (NBC News interview), despite the fact she was simply just actually on a proper diet and her PA was demanding she wear makeup. now on my way to meet you (the first real media thing she did) is a horribly exploitative show that is essentially miss north korea, where the more they pity you, the more you win. she’s been in the public eye for something extremely traumatic for 10 years now. some things are bound to not add up as she learns more about the world and how to make herself understood.

she’s fucked up from living in north korea, perhaps not as much as she says, but she’s certainly fucked. a grifter? maybe. she’s been taken advantage of for years, and had a fair few culture shocks within a few months, which would fuck anyone up. she was also robbed by some black women during 2020 with her son, which again is going to cause simply more and more trauma and probably harken back to when she had food stolen from her as a child. i don’t think any of her grifting is on purpose though, i think she’s just blinding following whoever tells her what to do, because that’s how she was raised. fuck, it could be her mother and sister pushing her to do this so they don’t have to do any work.

This reminds me of this ridiculous NK propaganda film that I once saw that purportedly described America to North Koreans, showing footage of bums outside and birds in the trees, saying that the bums eat the birds to survive, and once they run out of food in the winter the government of North Korea sneaks them supplies so that they can survive in our capitalist hellscape. I came to know of Yeonmi when SBS did a piece on her 8 years ago before her debut into the Western world.

Having been familiar with how the South Korean entertainment industry operates, I knew at that time the gimmick of her being a defector-turned-actress/activist wouldn't last long in South Korea and her acting roles would be severely limited to someone playing a North Korean or a minor supporting role at best. Even at that time, I remember that I was worried about the longevity of her career as a celebrity. I always assumed she had faded into obscurity until the memes of her Joe Rogan interview became popular.

The first thing I noticed after realizing it was her is that her cosmetic procedures and makeup style have changed to appeal to Westerners rather than Koreans; fuller lips, more pronounced arched-eyebrow shape, tan, the way she dresses. It's obvious she's given up on appealing to South Korea and is going full throttle with her grift in America

With that being said...

Yeonmi may be my favourite grifter and I can't be mad her antics. She just be making shit up on the spot and trolling gullible politicucks to fund her lavish "American Dream" lifestyle. She really doesn't give a fuck. I can't even say she's playing 4D chess, rather everyone around her seems to be playing and dumbed-down version of checkers.

She got everything she wanted and is just doing victory laps at this point. She is the embodiment of Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss.

There were always stories of North Koreans eating rats and other vermin but those tended to be about the famine in the 90s and starving political prisoners.
