YIIK: A Post Modern RPG / Ackk Studios / Andrew Allanson - "I wanted to make a game with a protagonist who was very unlikeable" - From Someone who is equally unlikeable. Currently developing Version I.V (1.5)

It's worth noting that these devs hired an obscure let's player to voice a character because they based it on him... who has anxiety so bad he basically never leaves his room. Who then commented about how he never wanted to play the role in an oneyplays comment section. Yiikes.

In that case, it makes the fact that Alex has the option to treat Rory like shit even worse. The devs knew this guy had social anxiety in all worse ways, and made him voice a character who can optionally kill themselves.

Oh, and I also forgot, the literal sperg who voiced Alex Eggleston also got #MeToo'd, and even admitted to it in a tumblr vlog that thankfully got archived.

And in the process of me looking into Chris' acting history, he did "additional voice" acting for an anime called Backstreet Girls, to which the premise of it is three Yakuza brothers fucked up a job so bad their boss give them a choice to ether commit sudoku, or turn into Thailand trannie idols for Japan. You can watch the series on the based and redpilled platform that is Netflix.

See, this is the kind of backpedaling that I actually don't want to see. They've made a game where their main character is a flat out awful person than nobody likes. They should own that, because its something, perhaps even the only thing, that actually makes the game stand out. I was actually considering playing the game awhile back because I'd heard the protagonist was so unlikable and they went to some lengths to make him that way. It sounded interesting.
I agree that they should have doubled down on it instead because it could have been an interesting concept but they do this weird shit where Alex is still acknowledged in the game as the good guy who is gonna make a change, and then they reveal at the end that he's literally god and he just yells "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON???" again and nothing interesting happens. You can bully one of the other party members into committing suicide but that's about the only insane thing you can do. I think at the time Allanson didn't understand that just making the protagonist a mean-spirited idiot doesn't necessarily make him interesting. It's unfortunately just weightless subversion.

Oh yeah I actually want to point this out for the OP, the screenshots and videos I posted were for the I.V patch, but that is actually a second major update for the game

The first one was Wrong Soul Requiem where they attempted to rehaul the gameplay and cutscenes only to not really change much in terms of balance and gameplay but changed the infamous alpaca scene to be more...

That, so release is like this

Original YIIK release, everyone shits on it
The lads go back and try to fix it, releasing it as 1.25 or Wrong Soul Requiem which no one cared much until Oneyplays played it
and now they're gonna try once more with I.V and it may have a much more significant story update that will totally fix everything and everyone will see YIIK as the grand masterpiece it should be

I do remember there being another trailer for the I.V patch but I cannot find it anymore (will update this post if I do), so here's a beardless Alex

Earthbound (Um in Japan it's Called Mother) Ruined an Entire Generation of Game Developers.

Seriously, I never played the original, but I did play Undertale… for a while, until the cutesyness pissed me off and I gave up.

If "Earthbound/Mother-Inspired RPG" always means "katy t3h PeNgU1N oF d00m! discovers RPGMaker," as seems to be the case, then I'm out.
Earthbound is the reason the term "Mother Fuckers" was coined.

I'm not sure what the Allanson brothers intentions are. They clearly don't have a strong playtest process and have a weird disdain for their customers. That's fine if you're a mysterious, ultra-talented Miles Davis type, but pretty puzzling when it's clear you're a retard with a bad grasp of the industry and limited talent.

Yiik is one of the more interesting trainwrecks of its kind, mainly due to its creator's sense of entitlement and lack of any self awareness.

Find a indie RPG not inspired by Earthbound challenge! (IMPOSSIBLE)

Atom RPG, Pier Solar, and, if you'll count it as an RPG, Rakuen.

Anyone know if this game is financially successful? It was universally panned, but somehow they still have the budget to keep working on it for far longer than large studios have supported some of their titles. Do they just have a small enough staff that they can run the whole thing on the cheap?

I am the king of the Mother fuckers

At this point YIIK is the boat sunk cost of video games

Here is really fucking underrated review of YIIK.

Otherwise, I see no point in making a thread about it. The only thing that can be considered milk is their passive-aggressive reactions to the failure of Two brothers in the game itself.
I can't hate yeek because that Running Shine review is one of my favorite videos of all time and I quote it endlessly.
"Oops I dropped my Green Day Album.
Aw there's Dylan and Eric again the little rascals!"

I had never watched it before until yesterday when I saw it posted here and it was absolutely wonderful. It’s like if E;R met Sseth met YMS and they had a 24 year old kid who posts on /bant/. I’m probably going to put it on again today as background noise while I’m working.

The World Ends With You is the only game that does the unlikable protagonist thing right imo
.hack//GU and Tales of Abyss do a good job of it too. It's really interesting seeing how the leads in those titles sort of change over time and grow into being better people. The problem with Alex is that they never really do a consistent job at framing him for being a dickhead or having anyone actually lash out at him. There are lots of little moments where they're like "JESUS ALEX!" but, that's all they are. Nothing like Haseo realizing how badly he was hurting Atoli in GU or Luke realizing what a spoiled little shit he was in Abyss.

You forgot the fact that YIIK allegedly plagiarized a scene in verbatim from Haruki Murakami’s After Dark, which was published (in Japanese) in 2004.

Even if you consider fair use and the idea that Alex (the game’s protagonist) read the book. How can someone in 1999 read something that wouldn’t exist (in English) until 2007?

I actually kind of liked Two Brothers. It had a fun co-op mode.

Shame they never fixed it.

Tales of the Abyss is the gold standard for writing your protagonist as an unlikeable asshole and actually making it work for the narrative. On top of that it's actually a good game, though it is somehow in 2021 still only available on PS2 or 3DS.
