YIIK: A Post Modern RPG / Ackk Studios / Andrew Allanson - "I wanted to make a game with a protagonist who was very unlikeable" - From Someone who is equally unlikeable. Currently developing Version I.V (1.5)

I'm surprised no one has jumped on the obvious joke that yiik and ackk are the noises you make when you're sick. Kind of a weird thing to name your game/company after.
at least they didn't name the fucking studio Ass To Mouth

I've read a theory from the comment section of various videos about Yiik that might explain the 90's video game discrepancy.

This will get autistic so brace yourselves.

The theory is that the game started in the 2010's after Alex graduated but once he returned to his hometown, his reality started deteriorating causing a shift in time and Alex isn't aware that he's in Franktown ( and the other locations he visits) during the 1990's .

Some examples that help the theory:
Proto-Micheal starts having a melt down about it during the Christmas cut scene, Chondra and Claudio have a missing younger brother that turns out to be an altenative reality version of Alex (with hints that they might not even belong to the game's main reality), and how Vela was from a previous reality that was years ahead of (time shifted) Alex's.

From what I understand, Micheal and Alex did play Chrono Trigger and the other games mentioned when they were kids while simultaneously being in the 90's but they aren't aware of their timeline being warped and how inconsistent their presence is.

Developers intentionally picked the worst party member as the protagonist, all the other characters were made to be interesting and likeable individuals. It has the same mocking relationship to "bland" relatable vidya protagonists that soyfaces had with the original wojak, as a mocking caricature of the viewer.
That makes me think of someone's critique of Final Fantasy 12, in which, while you are playing Vaan, the protagonist, you aren't really the leader of the story, but someone who is merely along for the ride of it as the revolution that occurs in the game is going on.

Anyone ever played VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action? It's a pretty good game that plays similarly to Papers Please and No Umbrellas Allowed. It came out way back in 2016 and had references to YIIK in anticipation of its release. The only reason I could see them doing that is because they had the same publisher and were convinced/forced to do it or the developers were friends or something. It's one thing for one game to shill another shitty game but to shill a shitty game that hadn't released yet? Never seen that before.
I remember looking up YIIK while i was playing VA-11 Hall-A and even writing down the release date because I was enjoying vallhalla so much and of course they wouldn't shill for a game that was going to be shit. Glad I forgot about it and never spent my money on this pile of crap

It's worth noting that these devs hired an obscure let's player to voice a character because they based it on him... who has anxiety so bad he basically never leaves his room. Who then commented about how he never wanted to play the role in an oneyplays comment section. Yiikes.

Oh, so thats why he sounded so familiar, lowkey feel bad for him, havent watched his shit in a good while but his content was decent for what it was, shame he got sucked into this trashfire

It baffles my mind how he really unironically thought his game was "meaningful, impactful and thought provoking" . That rant is golden, such a crybaby.

I believe this guy is like the embodiment of everything wrong withthe indie scene and the kind of douchebags that fester in it. Also, i don't think VA-11 Hall-A is any good either, i can see the devs being friends since they are the same type of people.

Ah yes the game that thinks spewing WORDS WORDS WORDS at the player for hours on end, obscure and shit combat mechanics, and a story about a self focused asshole getting everything he wants in the wrong way, all while featuring the real disappearance of a real person and spewing references left and right to "sell" it on it being a game.

What a fucking train wreck

(iirc there's now a mode that completely disables the protagonist's dialogue).
See, this is the kind of backpedaling that I actually don't want to see. They've made a game where their main character is a flat out awful person than nobody likes. They should own that, because its something, perhaps even the only thing, that actually makes the game stand out. I was actually considering playing the game awhile back because I'd heard the protagonist was so unlikable and they went to some lengths to make him that way. It sounded interesting.

Something that Oney talked about in his playthrough of the game was that the dev should have doubled down on his pretentiousness and not change shit that people complain about and I do agree with that

He should have kept the stupid LEMONADE scene/fight except maybe add more camera angles since it seems like more time was spent on that than actually fixing the gameplay as they promised the first time, but I guess we will see what happens when that fabled expansion (or sequel?) comes out

Wait, there's going to be a patch? I'd love to see where this goes. Will it be the redemption arc a la No Man's Sky, or will it be an even bigger trainwreck than before?

God I hope it's just as pretentious, just look at screenshots they've posted from various different tweets

Lastly, this is the trailer that told all of us that there would be more YIIK

Don't get me wrong, if we actually get answers to a bunch of bullshit from the main game then that's great but it's probably also gonna end up being really stupid and I'm all ready for it
