yo, can we like go back to appliances that...work? - Environmental bullshit breaking things that didn't need fixing

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
It’s almost all planned obsolescence. Almost every piece of electronics these days is deliberately not built to last. It’s more profitable to be buying new appliances every few years versus one that’s built to last for decades. It’s very challenging to find a manufacturer that produces anything meant to last beyond a few years. Same reason why every smartphone has to be replaced every 3-4 years to just play Candy Crush.

We use a washing machine at home from the early 2000s, and although the outer case has some rust, it still works remarkably well. I bought it for around $30 a few years ago as a non-working machine, but a simple plug replacement fixed it. It is completely electromechanical and has never failed unexpectedly. When issues do arise, they are usually simple fixes like replacing the belt or the latch switch.

It's mind blowing how new washers often don't perform well and tend to be really fragile. And don't get me started on those with touch panels and phone connectivity that if they aren't leveled properly, they can damage the drum. Looking at you LG!

Never buy a Kenmore appliance is all I can add to this thread. Fucking plastic in the dishwash disentegrated the top rack mechanism, the ovens ingniter has needed replacing twice, and the microwave now sometimes makes a popping noise and refuses to heat anything until unplugged and plugged back in.

Fucking thank God I am moving out of this rental this month.
I'll add fucking Samsung appliances to the list. Completely fucking garbage for anything that isn't a television.

Planned obsolescence is heinous. Somewhat recently had to get a new oven and fridge because a power surge killed the previous appliances (Thankfully the microwave survived).
So, here I am hoping the new stuff lasts a good while. At least theyre not a pain to work with and aren't smart . Sadly, the oven sometimes asks if I want to hook up my phone, but I refuse to use any apps for an OVEN. I couldn't find any otherwise. However, I would dread having to get a new washer and dryer because all the new models I saw while shopping for appliances looked so flimsy.

edit: typo, wording.

Whirlpool can rot in hell, my new place came with Whirpool everything, and it's all shit. All of it.. And because everything is integrated, it's going to be a lot more expensive to replace than with freestanding stuff.
Holy shit when I was still living with my parents the old washing machine broke and they replaced with a whirlpool one... Well this fucking thing destroyed all of my clothes no matter the setting my mom used.. and since my parents were poor they couldn't replace it or acknowledge the problem at all.. they insisted that I was imagining things lol

Ooooh my friend their TVs are also ahit... ! My brother bought a $2000 tv with a 4 year extended extended warranty. Some white LED strips burned out after 4 years and 1 week and now the picture is very dim. There is also light bleeding fromm the edges, probably due to melted/broken light diffuser. This is a common issue with this model..

When a single circuit board fries on a new appliance, it's essentially worthless to the point that even the manufacturer tells you "lmao just buy a new one".
This is the crux of the issue. Modern appliances have so much fucking electronics or mechanisms in them designed make them efficient that they naturally break rendering the appliance useless as its just too much pita to "fix".

Like most government regulation, the manufacturers absolutely love it. They get to charge more for new appliances all the while knowing these newer appliances will never last as long forcing consumers to buy more often.

Heres a used appliance seller going over this topic;
