Your current and next phone. - Smartphone general

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Most feature phones sold in the US now are just 2013 era prepaid smartphones pretending to keep things simple whilst adding more steps to basic functions. In the rest of the world, feature phones are doomed to an early grave because they are stuck on 2G and 3G, and most LTE capable examples are running the shitty KaiOS or Android Go which exhausts the appeal of such phones. Maybe that's the plan. Edit: Holy fuck there is so much white space I can't get rid of in this post, why.

Right now I'm using an LG V20. It's the last flagship with a removable battery. It's still fast enough for everything I need, and it lasts 4 days with an extended battery that makes it 2.25 cm thick. It also has an excellent DAC, IR blaster, and a camera with a good manual mode. Only "downside" is that mine is stuck with the stock ROM, but I debloated it as much as I can, and old Android has a way better UI than new versions anyway. I hate all the rounded corners and excessive blank space.

If it dies and I'm unable to repair it or get another V20 I guess it'll either be a used Xperia, a Pixel with GrapheneOS or a Fairphone (hopefully the next Fairphone has a headphone jack).

Okay, so took the plunge and upgraded from the S10+ to the Fold 3. I got $800 trade-in credit, which was about how much I paid for the previous phone, 3 years ago. Battery life is good, so far. Screen cameras are a bit dated, but the rear cameras are excellent. Feels heavy and durable. Speaker audio is amazing and the Dolby Atmos also makes my car audio sound better via Bluetooth. Having a tablet that fits in your pocket to play games and videos is unparalleled. Not having an audio jack is the only downside. Cover screen is perfect for one handed use.

Asus makes good stuff, as does Sony.

Currently have a Samsung S10+ that's getting 3 years old and almost end of life on updates. The battery is definitely showing it's age. I'm debating on waiting for the S22 Ultra or getting the Fold 3.
I'm waiting for the last Android update ( Android 12) on my S10 then I'll start looking for it's replacement. The Xperia 5 3 looks to be as good as it's going to get for a "flagship"

Else a Pixel 5a

Those Sony phones seem overpriced for what they are. They look nice but not sure if the cost is worth it.
Had bad luck with Sony phones. My Z3v [2014] lagged out, battery degraded fast, and the charging port broke within a year and a half. Got an XA2 way later [2018] and after 6 months of use it would stutter, gyroscope broke, and it randomly shut off multiple times during the day. Samsung and Motorola have more longevity and reliability in my experience.

Previous: Samsung Galaxy Note 5
Current: Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC
Future: something with goddamn video out, Xiaomi need to stop believing the consoomers and put something over USB 2.0 in their phones!

I loved the Note 5, used it for 6 years, would probably still be using it but the battery dies randomly even with a full charge.

I started rooting and using custom roms within a year of buying the Note 5, it took me a long time to decide what to replace it with (okay okay I might have an over-research issue), finally decided the Poco X3 was the way to go, I no longer wanted to be fleeced with 'on plan' phones, and didn't want to spend over AUD$300 but broke that with spending $70 more.

I had it rooted in just over a week (had to wait for the unlock to happen), and in the meantime MIUI wasn't actually that bad an operating system, I'd purged it of everything I could in terms of tracking, and apps I didn't want while waiting for the unlock, there were even things I wished the custom roms could have integrated. I am still happy with everything after a year, I've gone through 4 custom roms (that happens especially with the changes g has made in the last year), you can set individual apps to use the the GPU over the system, plus the options of changing the refresh rate from 30-120Hz, bar one thing, I have horrible eyesight even with glasses, and I play a lot of games, thanks to developers putting more and more on the screen, I often have a lot of trouble finding shit, so I really need a larger screen.

I thought I'd researched enough to be able to also buy a portable monitor and play them through that BUT what I didn't find out was that touch screens don't appear to work with the displaylink type solutions (luckily I hadn't spent the money on buying the monitor and extra stuff needed).

I don't really want to buy another phone right now (haven't got the money for that, and don't know that I'd be able to sell the Poco, even if I advertise it as an 'anti g' phone), there is really no need, besides the game thing, so at present I either strain my eyes or use scrcpy to play them on the computer. It's just annoying when I'm lazing around and don't want to have to sit at the computer to play a game.

just came to know about a phone from a bankrupt company called yota 3+. now i want a phone with eink display so bad

I don't do smartphones. I have a mobile hotspot and whatever device (s) I choose to do IP telephony through.

My five year old LG K20 gave up the ghost a few days ago. (LG doesn't even make phones any more.) They didn't even want it to reycle it. Loved that damn phone.

Anyway, bought a moto g stylus 5G after about 30 seconds of research and...kinda hate it so far. Probably more phone than I need and way more money than I wanted to pay; US$200 plus a $38 up the ass fee/sales tax imposed by my carrier, Metro POS, but with a credit of some sort on the phone. I was in a jam, needed a phone and am hoping by paying more I have one that will last me a while. We shall see, I guess. 🤷‍♂️

None of the apps I installed through FDroid made the trip, wish I could remember the name of the YouTube alternate I installed; it was better than NewPipe by a mile. Neither did my contacts, though that is probaby due to Metro PCS.

I also haven't got a clue WTF to do with the stylus. Draw dick pictures in meetings or something, I guess.

Currently got a Motorola Defy after I killed my last phone. Might have been a Sony, might have been a Nokia.
The Defy was cheap, and is supposed to be able to handle a beating. Made by the same people who make the CAT phones. It's not groundbreaking in terms of specs, but it would have been a top phone a couple of years ago so... Who cares. I like it. Big and sturdy.

My next phone will probably be something cheap as well. Don't really care.
