I'm going to ask this here:

I just broke my phone's screen (Android). The phone still 'works' in that I can answer calls on my bluetooth headset and hear notifications, but the screen just doesn't come on.

I already have a replacement, but I wanted to grab some pictures I had on there. Is there any way to get around having to select for USB file transfer so I can copy those over to my computer?

depending on the phone you might be able to hook it up to a monitor and use it like a computer but i dont know what phone youre using so i wouldnt know if that would work or not
furthermore i dont remember if that was an option you had to turn on in the settings or not

It's a Samsung Galaxy A52

I've tried using the same USB hub I use with my steam deck but I'm not getting anywhere. The phone does charge (makes a charging noise) but I'm not getting any picture on the TV.

its a very specific type of cable. you'd need something like a usb c to hdmi display cable to maybe get it to work. even then, looking up the phone, i only see one thread on reddit about a person trying to do something similar and it may or may not work depending on the cable you get because usb c cables are fucking weird

Not all phones with USB C cables support display output. The A52 is only USB 2.0 with otg and charging according to the specs.

I know mouse and keyboard work over USB C. Is it possible for me to just do my swipe motion using a mouse? I just need the thing to allow me to transfer files

You could do that. It might take some guess work if you remember the motions to click file transfer. Alternatively if you know the keyboard input works you can try that and tab your way to the correct selection.

Sucks that I have to resort to using stock android for the Pixel 6 if I want to utilize Android Auto for my car. I used GrapheneOS for almost a year, and overall it was a good experience. Work around for this is to just get a cheap phone and hotspot it to my actual phone, but I can't afford that at the moment. Really wish I could have accessibility AND decent privacy for my phone.

"hur dur i want my phone on my car"

yeah whatever... the Car Play and Android Auto are overrated and broken.

Works fine for me. The thing that sucks about them is the limited support they have, especially with Apple stuff. It's more of a safety thing to, and regular mounts I've used over the years have ALL sucked.

Before using Android auto, I was really enthusiastic about it and wanted a car with that feature built in. I then got a car with that built in and used it regularly for a while before I stopped and ultimately sold the car. Maybe it's the way I use it or don't use it. Android auto/car play are unnecessary distractions and provide no real benefit as a motorist.

I drive a 10 year old car that doesn't have the infotainment bullshit, so Android Auto paired with my aftermarket head unit allows me to take hands free calls without having to take my eyes off the road. That's really the best use for it besides GPS.

It's basically down to the Pixel and Samsung line isn't it? Such a shame as Samsung's ui is pretty bloated. I've had a massive dislike for it since touchwiz in the galaxy 3.
In the UK, we also have Sony Xperia and Nokia. Sony is still brilliant and reliably Japanese. However, their phones have an outdated stock UI. They had an excellent interface up until 2018 but their camera menu has always been fantastic for creators. Nokia makes poorly designed/built phones that nobody buys now.

Oppo/OnePlus (same company) looks good but since it's Chinese, no way in hell am I buying one. Xiaomi is far too dodgy and its UI is bloated with advertisements and Chinese propaganda. Motorola is now a part of CCP owned Lenovo. Honor phones are still CCP owned even after being sold by Huawei. The cheap prices are too good to be true from these brands,

Can someone recommend a good Android phone with a big screen (5-6 inches) that is KNOWN to be rootable? I had to get my current one in a big damn hurry for a new job and didn't have time to shop for rootables.

Pixel 6a. Next, probably 8a, if they keep going. Have been running Pixels and Nexus... nexii? Or partner phones/one phones since forever, including the Hero if you can include it. Waiting on flashing it until the retardation around Graphene settles down, or figure out where else to go.

(I get the retardation around ads and globohomo, but I can't imagine going to a gypsy to get a hot phone, over getting a phone unlocked from a legit source, given the option. I don't even get refreshed electronics anymore, too paranoid.)
