youtube-dl DMCA'd by the RIAA - RIAA and MPAA are on a mass takedown spree

Debian maintains that list. "Debian is a registered trademark of Software in the Public Interest, Inc."
Yes, and the youtube-dl source code is available through each and every one of the primary mirrors, and I imagine most of the secondary mirrors would have it as well. Don't forget that the source is on the youtube-dl website, too.

Its an open source program, it needs a stable, centralized location for people to contribute to it at. A million mirrors only helps to distribute the compiled code, not develop it and patch it every time google changes how youtube works.

I don't think this is a proper use of DMCA Takedowns. As every DMCA claim I have seen requires you to assert under oath that either you or whoever you are working with, owns the copyright to the content in question.

Apart from perhaps the m4a files, I don't think anyone from the RIAA or anyone they represent owns the copyright to the source code of youtube-dl.

That's not really an issue, though. Even if RIAA somehow manages to get youtube-dl taken off of GitHub, someone would just have to set up a git server hosted outside of the US, and then it's back to business as usual.

If?

Microsoft ain't about to eat that dick for these retards and their FOSS project. It folded immediately. If GitGud tried to eat that dick they'd get sued and I know the people running that can't afford it. Unless the EFF funds this it's over. Google also sometimes funds these landmark fair use fights, but - uh - there's an awkward relation between YouTube and Google which would inform RIAA negotiations with Google in terms of its current use of copyrighted music via Google Music / YouTube Red.

I'm fairly sure that this isn't how the DMCA works
However it's supposed to work, right now it's a big rape stick that puts an urgent onus on platforms to hedge against creative rights and it is not surprising Github has already folded.

I don't quite get the RIAA's angle here. I understand them going after torrent sites, Mega etc due to their obvious purpose to be sharing actual music that could have been bought - but it's not like they're selling music videos to anyone.
Are they afraid people are using the sound-only extractor options for music videos?

This seems a case of "legally they're in the right, not sure it's worth their time".

My point is that Youtube is the one hosting the material, youtube-dl is just a tool to download videos, so the onus is on YouTube for hosting copyrighted material. Youtube-dl is not branded as a piracy tool in any way. I'd wager most people techy enough to use it probably use it to edit actual videos.

What's next, are they going to DMCA apple for people ripping movies with their iPhones in a theater?

Well shit.
youtube-dl is a program I use alot :stress:

Use Jdownloader2, it captures copying the link even.

Pros: easy to use, made in Java so it works on all platforms, lots of options for youtube like culling 2160p VP9.

Cons: Made in Java, made by german Linux spergs, there's some optional pay shit I don't understand and it's probably meant for porn.

Youtube-dl uses python though, you have to install it through pip on linux IIRC.
