Youtube General thread (formerly Youtube Censorship discussion thread)

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
For purposes of data hoarding, I'm doing downloads of some people's channels to my external HDD. Yet just now, I keep having problems with some playlists, with messages of "
Video unavailable. This content isn't available, try again later." Not even asking to sign in. Rather annoying, not sure if I have to reset my router to continue. Kiketube, you're really becoming a pain in the ass, aren't you?

They will happily run ads on tasteless shit like this, but God help you if you say fuck a few too many times.

Face censored out of respect.

Well, it finally happened, y2mate has gone full shill. All downloads aside from 360p want you to use some sort of bloatware to download your video instead of simply downloading the video for you in the browser. Sometimes, 720p and 1080p work too but most of the time, only 360p does. Other quality downloads are not available anymore without downloading their spyware software.

There is several other downloaders I have just in case, not going to name them in case powers that be are lurking, but it's a damn shame to see y2mate go. I've been using it for nearly a decade now and it's never let me down. In the end it wasn't Youtube that made it shit the bed, they did it themselves.

They probably need to fund premium accounts by taking up space on your drive and selling your data. The easiest way for a for-profit venture to continue downloading ad-free videos is to pay the nose toll.

Youtube Redux is royally fucking up youtube for me. Idk if its because I have less space on my OS drive or because theres some problem with Redux itself. Whenever I open youtube on any browser with Redux enabled, the youtube tab hangs and crashes within 5 seconds, only that tab alone while the browsers unaffected. I hope the devs can fix it cause I really like Redux and I dont want to use Youtube without it.

Youchu.be, the Invidious instance I use and one of the last ones that was still working, is now giving me 502 bad gateway errors. I tried several other frontends, including Piped, Poketube, CloudTube, and Invuedious, but none of them worked. This sucks a big one, but I'm glad I downloaded all the videos I wanted to before that happened.

The number and frequency of ads keep increasing. Before they would have ads between two videos at the start or end.
Now its between each video, start AND end.

Again, just how much money Youtube is making off of this? I cant imagine its much. And its not like making competitors is really working in making Google stop worsening the experience.

Freetube/yt-dlp/Seal/others I assume are all just taking the 'can unlock age-restricted content' out of the feature listings, so it is either too early days to know if there is an alternative method or if they will just give up.
On that note, is there any ability to create a Google account that does not require a phone number? You used to be able to do it directly through YouTube and it would skip verification but I doubt that is still a thing.

Local file chads stay winning, might i reccomend nicotine+ to all the streamingfags here? you could also use yt-dlp i suppose but then your downloading nasty mp3 tier files of music.
MP3 is fine really, 320 is more than enough headroom. Your best bet is to always get it in its original format, no transcoding, and upcoding iis bullshit and a waste of space.

I think youtube uses OPUS and m4a for audio a lot nowadays.

Good shoutout to nicotine as well, and soulseek.

If its music your after then a good torrent site for that style is always a great place. I use metal tracker, has an obscene amount of stuff. Real obscure shit as well.

They're running some anti-botting thing now for downloads, could be that. You might get that generic error message about the video from your DL software when youtube really wants you to identify bicycles and streetlights to prove you're not a bot.

Looks like the advertisers at YT have a new trick to counter Invidious instances: making them do a "gateway timeout" (even more).
Imo should be illegal to "error block" or "error ban" people. Same for shadow banning.

It's one thing when a shitty forum does it, another when a large platform with monetary incentive does it.

New trick BS, pulled by YT: preventing Invidious instances from even searching for vids?

This sucks a big one, but I'm glad I downloaded all the videos I wanted to before that happened.
Like I said, it shouldn't be surprising if the Invidious project is just shut down soon.

Also, best to make sure to back up the files you have offline, instead of having 1 copy.

I think you often can, but "suspicious activity" might escalate the AI overlord controlling Alphabet to asking for your number.

I just bought a cheap Android tablet and created a new Google account on it during the setup process. Did it ask for a phone number? No. The last thing they want is for some boomer to get frustrated with their brand new tablet so this must be one of the highest trust scenarios. Whether it will stay that way, I don't know.

Use https://inv.nadeko.net/

It's the instance that has worked the best over the past months, even if the dev is a pozz faggot.
Remember when Invidious used to have a lot of alternatives? Now there are only 3 remaining on the list with yewtu.be being oldest Invidious instance has been delisted from Invidious instance page. You can still use other instances that's not on the list as long as it works under disclaimer at your own risk.

Also a reminder Null warned us about Internet becomes smaller and smaller before. Archive everything you like or find it important before it's too late.

Yewtu.be seems to be back among visible instances, however videos still don't load for me yet. I don't get the "Please log in" or whatever message anymore but the thumbnail of the video never goes live.

Same with Youchu.be. I can browse videos again, but still can't watch anything. That's okay. I can still use it to mark which ones I want to download.
