Youtube Institutes Monetization Changes - ....Really?

So earlier today, Youtube rolled out changes to its monetization setup:

Reading these, you can immediately see that they're ambiguous enough to allow widespread demonetization of virtually everything and then some. But a recent vid by Phillip DeFranco, and reports by several other YouTubers has revealed a pattern in the channels getting demonetized:

I'm hoping to Christ that this pattern isn't as insane as it seems at a glance, because fuck, man.

Problem is as long as there's no alternative competitors to YouTube (Vimeo, Dailymotion etc. suck anyway) it seems that YouTube can does whatever the fuck it wants even if it manages to piss off 100% of the users.

Are there any other video sites that users can monetize?

Has there been any reports of this happening to actual videos? All I'm seeing is vloggers getting mad they're missing out on some free money for talking in front of a camera for 20 minutes and using enough jump cuts to cut it down to 10.

YouTube: now rated pg-13

Ironically this happened around the same time they launched their YouTube Kids app. Coincidence?

If you've been around kids for any length of time, you know that youtube to kids, is like say the first time your family gets the 24/7 cartoon cable channel when you were a kid, except 10 times better than that.

Here is an old video from Athene who is a longtime youtuber who is reflecting on where youtube and the internet is today and where it was.

But i think its a two birds with one stone strategy. Tailor advertising to Children, and secondly, indoctrinate the new youth in what to think. Or really, what not to think about.

And when reporting something controversial like the news becomes unprofitable on youtube, guess who is there to take up the slack and stay "on message"?

So, what seems to have happened is this:
1. The rules in question have been around since June 2015, just poorly enforced.
2. Yesterday, YT decided to push a new automation update with regards to enforcing said rules.
3. Because of this, they sent out a new email/update that showcased those rules again, making people think they're new and suddenly enforced.
4. The Autobots went on a fucking rampage.

And that's what this is: Automated pruning of videos, done by algorithms and pushed by people at Google/Youtube who didn't think things through. Because they DID leave themselves an "out" to allow successful, advertiser-desired channels that feature rude language and/or 'offensive' content, with this part: "If the video does contain inappropriate content, the context is usually newsworthy or comedic and the creator's intent is to inform or entertain (not offend or shock)."

So they KNOW that they have thousands of channels with swearing and rudeness who pull in the money, and they want to keep them.

But a new update of the pruning/searching algorithms on the site made them go into overdrive.

According to Twitter, a lot of the videos made ineligible were vlogs dealing with mental illnesses, bodily disfigurement, and poverty issues. Wouldn't it be funny if this is the issue that makes GG and anti-GG put aside their differences?

they can do that. it is their website

These changes are blowing up

Get ready for every youtube talking head to be going on about this for awhile. The fat these are going up so fast is surprising to say the least. Like the H3H3 lawsuit and resulting legal fund, I wonder if this'll lead to people trying to crowd fund a youtube alternative.

Considering the video you posted with this, I couldn't resist pointing out the appropriate typo.

Also anyone trying to make money off YouTube is a total autist.

They are going to do whatever the people who buy ads want.

This is what Retsupurae have been saying forever. You cannot bank off living off YouTube forever. This isn't like running a blog. If you cannot parlay this into other ventures, YouTube will change things on you and you are fucked. How many users actually abuse the monetization anyway? A lot. YouTube is a short term investment to get into bigger and better things. But I can't wait to watch the salt mines pile up.

You think that the people that make a living off Youtube are somehow going to have RL TV jobs appear for them or something? If people lose their livelyhoods over this, then there is going to be a pretty long line for the McDonalds jobs I reckon, if there are any jobs out there for them at all.

Edit: I have just been informed McDonalds has touchscreens.

Markiplier and Smosh got comic book jobs from it.

Maxilimian used YouTube for fighting game hosting gigs.

Harry Partridge did animated work for the BBC.

Shane Dawson did a shitty TV show for Netflix.

Countless Youtubers wrote books.

Lisanova did a season of MadTV.

Not much but at least getting the foot in the door is one thing.

man I wish I wasn't old bitter and pessimistic. Ah to be young again.

These were the last tweets DeFranco sent out.
