Business YouTube is cracking down on adblock users: pay or disable - this is reminder to install brave

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
YouTube has introduced an anti-adblock feature, which alerts users with pop-ups and interrupts the viewing experience. The adblocking community is already working on ways to defeat the feature, but YouTube seems to be changing its detection scripts constantly.

Users trying to view a YouTube video with an adblocker enabled are now greeted with a pop-up warning.

“Adblockers are not allowed on YouTube,” the warning reads. “You can go ad-free with YouTube Premium, and creators can still get paid from your subscription.”

The buttons below give users two options: either allow ads or choose a paid subscription. However, for now, closing the alert allows viewing the video.

Complaints about YouTube’s actions have started appearing on social media, as many people use adblockers for limiting trackers and other privacy-intruding scripts. Security researchers have been urging users to restrict exposure to ad networks for a while now because they’re often used to deliver spyware such as Pegasus.

“Awfully brave of YouTube to think I'm gonna stop using AdBlock before I stop using YouTube,” one X user shared.

Others encouraged resistance against YouTube’s new measure by leaving adblocking solutions enabled: “If you show Google that you are willing to forgo your adblocker for YouTube, they will make this new adblock ban a permanent change.”

An ad-free YouTube Premium subscription costs users $13.99 per month.

Adblocking community working on a workaround

The adblocker provider AdBlock Plus says that YouTube’s wall is “particularly distressing to many of our users.” Some of them are unhappy that many ads on YouTube include “obvious scams” that stay afloat even after reporting them to Google.

For now, AdBlock Plus recommends that users keep their filter lists up to date so that any changes made by the filter list authors are applied to their extensions. They can also add YouTube to their allowlists, which will continue blocking ads elsewhere but allow them when watching the popular website.

The uBlockOrigin adblocker already has a workaround offered on its subreddit page. For that, users have to update the extension and its filter with quick fixes to the latest version.

The post also warns that stacking multiple adblockers or using old block lists won’t help.

“Disclaimer: YouTube changes their detection scripts twice a day, which means that even if you got a filter update earlier today, another one might be required soon. There's no way around this if you want to remain logged in,” the post reads.

Some X users also shared filters for the adblocker to turn off the new YouTube feature.

Ads are a significant attack vector

Blocking malicious ads with adblocking software is an essential component of good cybersecurity hygiene and is recommended by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

Malvertising is a significant vector for exploiting networks as it bypasses built-in browser settings to protect against pop-ups and website redirects. Malicious ads can generate a forced redirect or deliver a malicious payload.

“Adblocking software prevents different types of ads from displaying or removes them altogether, reducing the risk of receiving malicious advertisements or being redirected to malicious websites. A common adblocking technique uses web browser extensions that allow organizations to customize and control how online advertisements appear. CISA encourages organizations to evaluate solutions that would allow the ability to block a malicious advertisement,” the organization writes in its recommendations.

However, YouTube is not stepping back and insists that users will receive multiple notifications urging them to cease using the tools – or subscribe to YouTube Premium – before their viewing is disrupted, The Verge reported.

“We take disabling playback very seriously and will only disable playback if viewers ignore repeated requests to allow ads on YouTube,” Google spokesperson Oluwa Falodune’s mail to The Verge reads. “In cases when viewers feel they have been falsely flagged as using an adblocker, they can share this feedback by clicking on the link in the prompt.”

Over my dead body. Install brave or mozila i tested them both working , mozila had few days before they patched up and brave never had a bleep. Their blocking the adblock solution is now only workable on chrome . Also brave on mobile can play music in backround from youtube without paying shekels for premium. If youtube wants my money better let me view my downloaded videos without internet connection or demonitase and ban my favorite creators every time, or i dont know give me what i search for . Reminder to replace google with brave search engine or any non google based engine

Forgot to mention that if you're on Android, you can use Newpipe. This fork has SponsorBlock and the Return YouTube Dislike baked in. @Pee Cola posted a link to this fork which has Rumble and Bitchute added.
Has newpipe added a feature to log in to your account yet? That's the only thing preventing me from switching over from vanced.

Does basic brave still block it? I haven't seen any of these pop ups while using it, but admittedly I don't watch youtube that much these days anyways.

YouTube are updating their detection methods fairly frequently right now - several times per day. You can track them here, with the newest being at the bottom: -

Currently we're on "39fc077e", which has already been defeated in uBlock Origin, so if you use that, update the "uBlock filters - Quick Fixes" list, restart your browser, and you should be good to go for a while.

There's also this extension for Chrome or Firefox, which I have not tried personally, but it works by playing the ads at a massively increased speed, then skipping them ASAP, so the interruption time is only around 50ms, which is nothing: -

As that isn't actually blocking the ads, even though you never see them, it's not picked up by YouTube's detection methods; not yet anyway. If you try it, you must make sure you disable any other ad-blocking extension on YouTube.

What's funny is that I got that. Got all the way to the point where it wouldn't let me watch videos anymore. All I had to do was disable my adblock, refresh the page, then re-enable adblock and refresh again. Smooth sailing since, not a single alert or ad.

Youtube got me on Brave but not Firefox with Ublock Origin. I'll try this though. It was getting annoying.

The average normie using the app will just put up with ads or not even know they can block them. I assume that the vast majority of viewers are these people anyway. Aren't most viewers not even logged in?

I think it's rolling out to random people little by little. It took forever for me to finally get the popup.

No integration with youtube accounts, unfortunately. Still able to create a Google Takeout of the channels you're following and import them, but I can see how that's not up to everyone's preference.

This is the route I went with, along with keeping all filter lists in AdNauseum up to date.

>Non-woke: Nope.
>Ads being short like 1-5 seconds short: Like hell. Enjoy watching this badly done play.
>Offer a better service through red/premium: Nope its just youtube. Its still dying by the way.
>Being a decent platform overall: Nope. They gutted all the good features back at 2006. And they're still shitting on creatives in favor of corporate garbage.

Vid still relevant to this day.

People aren't gonna support youtube because they know the website is pure cancer that everyone is forcing themselves to sit through like an ad. That said, alternatives are cropping up and they have better shows.

I wouldn't even have a problem with the ads in and of themselves if the number hasn't increased exponentially over time. There's no reason any video no matter its length requires more than one, it's not like they have huge fixed costs like a television network to cover.

What's funny is until I got that Friendly Adblock they just pissed me off and I made sure I wouldn't buy whatever product was being advertised. So great job there YouTube, hope the advertisers are aware of that issue.

I'm sorry, but youtube has gone SO FUCKING HEAVY on the ads since the adpocalypse cut the number of monetizable creators by a significant margin.

This is something these companies have never understood. The reason everybody switched to ad blockers was because websites started to have ~8 ads on the page. I don't need to see 5 ads on a 15 minute video, or a 30 second ad on a 15 second short.

This was inevitable when the 'convenience crowd' paid for youtube premium instead of telling youtube to go fuck themselves.

They deserve this idiot tax for being idiots.

Judging by what Twitch did with Twitch Turbo, Youtube Premium will only stop ads for a while. At some point, the ads will start to creep back in, as a feature.

Jewtube wanting more shekels.

If you're on a computer you can use SponsorBlock. It works surprisingly well and you can choose which type of segments you wish to skip, ie. sponsored content, interaction reminders, etc.
i dont care about the "this video was sponsored by squarespace" shilling people put in their videos, because i can just skip over that shit in a few seconds and it isn't intrusively annoying like actual yt ads are

This downward spiral will never stop.

YouTube makes too little money > YouTube puts more ads > People are annoyed and block the ads > YouTube tries and bypass adblockers > People start blocking harder > Advertiser profits go down > Youtube puts more ads > People are annoyed and block the ads > YouTube tries and bypass adblockers > People start blocking harder > Advertiser profits go down > Youtube puts more ads > People are annoyed and block the ads > YouTube tries and bypass adblockers > People start blocking harder > Advertiser profits go down > Youtube puts more ads...

Eventually all you will have is a page that looks like a old school yellow pages phonebook of ads which you need to directly insert your credit card into to even have a glimpse of some dude's video.

this. ive been saying this about the entire internet for years. whenever i see a website complain about people using adblockers i have to mention how it is their fault for making everything so ad heavy. i dont know how normies do it, but whenever ive seen websites without using an adblocker it is nothing but ads literally all over the page; it is so unusable. that is why i use adblockers because without them i literally cannot use the website.

if websites want people to not use adblockers then they can start by not treating their users as nigger cattle whom they can shove as many annoying and pointless ads down their throats. start treating your users with respect.

If you go on wikia without an adblock on your phone, there's a banner ad for the website itself that takes up a full 50% of the screen and plays a full volume video. It was mind blowing when I saw it.
The question of 'Is it moral to block ads' seems to also be rearing its retarded head. It's immoral to try and show me ads and if I had the power to physically mail every advertiser shit caked firecrackers, I would.

Still isn't bothering me with Ublock and Braveshield.... I suspect this only getting the basic bitch adblockers.
It's some region or account based toggle. I avoided it until a week or so ago. Then it appeared regardless of which adblocker I tried. Then disabled the browser adblock, reset uBlock Origin to defaults, updated all filters and it started blocking well again.
Hope it sticks
