DOOM

Apparently some fresh drama is brewing over the Doom Eternal soundtrack.

Have to wonder if Mick Gordon is conveniently omitting some important detail here.
In the initial whining he skipped around how many deadlines he'd missed, and how much leeway Bethesda had given him.

Given Eternal's massive success its clear he wasn't the linchpin he thought he was.

Grinding out the event because I want that Pain Elemental skin so badly, and Jesus Super Gore Nest on Classic mode is brutal.

I'm torn between wanting to congratulate the level of spite that went into it, or ripping out the designers arsehole through their mouth.

So, I played 2016 again after not touching Eternal for over 2 months now, and well... I actually did better and found myself far less reliant on Siege Mode.

I love not having to care about ammo count, but I did miss the meat hook and dashes. Oh, and the recovery combo of belch + frost + any AoE instant heal everything. Also, noob tube mode shotty is way better in 2016.

So basically, the interesting worldbuilding and lore of 2016 was good by pure accident?

That's just...astounding. It sure as hell doesn't feel like it was made in 2 days. And ironically it felt as though it had more consideration for its ideas than the entirety of Eternal's story.
Walter B. Gibson believed the best stories were written quickly, and was the king of pulp in his time. Maybe it's true for shooter storylines too.

I can see it because one of the main problems I have with Eternal's story is that it seems like they really overthought it. In 2016 they barely had time to do more than "angry guy kills shit" and some background on Argent D'Nur. This time it seems like they had more time for the story but it resulted in a kind of a clusterfuck where it seemed like not even they could keep track of what was going on.

Anybody got any mod recommendations? Been replaying Ultimate Doom on GZDoom and wanna try out something else in the Doom engine, I've already played MOON and Army of Darkness Doom

If you've got Doom II, I highly recommend Doom Zero. Its level design feels like a natural evolution of what you'd see in the classic games yet are arguably more intense and elaborate. It feels like an unofficial Doom 3 in a way.

Eviternity's another great one. Some of the most beautiful aesthetics I've ever seen in a Doom mod, and it has some of the most insane fights as well. It's probably my favorite in terms of what it does with the Doom engine; some of the levels have to be seen to be believed.

This was a big problem with Doom 3 as well. They clearly spent significant time fleshing out the backstory for the game, which I assume is why they expected you to spend so much time paging through those fucking datapad entries.

i've never played doom but i really like the music.
I'm saving up for something rn thats why i dont have it rn.
Doom looks fun from some of the gameplay I've seen ( i've only seen an small amount of it)

I finally got around to playing Doom Eternal and yeah, the story is completely fucking retarded. Doom 2016 felt like Halo CE, where the main story is a pretty basic sci-fi plot about killing aliens/demons. Doom Eternal felt like the later Halo games where the story just goes off the rails with different factions of ancient aliens influencing humanity's evolution. The structure doesn't help the story much either, because it's literally just Doomguy getting teleported to new POI's that we're told are important to basically go on fetch quests, whereas 2016's progression is a lot more logical.

It's honestly just bizarre to me why they took a complete 180 with Eternal. 2016 was a really straightforward no-frills shooter where pumping bullets into demons and punching their heads off is front and center. It's certainly not a realistic game, but it definitely felt immersive, and the environments believable, like they are real locations that were actually used and lived-in at some point. Eternal on the other hand felt like a theme park ride, where you're sorta just being shuffled to these different setpieces that are very obviously designed as video game levels. This isn't helped by the obviously video-gamey interactive elements, like the punchable objects and the breakable walls, which just makes the environment feel very manufactured. There's nothing inherently wrong with this sort of design, but it's just sort of jarring going from the fairly immersive world of Doom 2016 to the very not-immersive Doom Eternal.

What. Why the hell not? You're interested enough to name yourself after it, go play it. You can play doom and doom 2 in a browser window.
Something I've been meaning to ask the thread about: What port do you speds recommend for someone who can't play the older games without mouselook? God knows I've tried, but I cut my shooter teeth on Half-Life and trying to do that shit on keyboard alone just does not compute in my brain.

GZDoom is my go-to port. It's easy to set up and fairly feature-rich. It includes toggleable mouselook.

I like CrispyDoom; it's a nice halfway point between vanilla/Chocolate and GZDoom; it's technically limit removing, but it retains the old low-res look and feel. You can make it run at higher and cleaner resolutions, but at that point you might as well be using GZDoom. You'll have to monkey around in the configuration a little to get it exactly what you want, but you can get it to where you can comfortably use a mouse and it's not that hard to fix.

You can also config Chocolate Doom to do the same and play with a mouse, you just can't look up or down and it doesn't offer any graphical bells and whistles beyond what's available in vanilla (meaning low resolutions and such).

GZDoom is the best option if you want to play most mods, but you have to configure it to make it look good, because the main dev is an insane person who put the worst settings by default.

GZDoom is the best easily accessible source port. Just make you turn off shit like texture filtering/smoothing. Everything else can be adjusted to suit your preferences.

PrBoom+ is also a commonly used source port to keep things mostly as vanilla as possible while still having some QoL features and compatibility options.

Going Down is good shit.
Ancient Aliens is also pretty neat.
Also Sonic Robo Blast 2 if you're autistic. The kart racer spinoff is really fun.

There is more story in Doom 2016 if you read the codex and find the Slayers' Testaments, but it's just enough to make the Alex Jones Doomguy memes funnier. Does Eternal try to explain why Hell is littered with ammunition for Doomguy to use (and which demons can't use)? You'd think if the demons dropped a temple on him they'd take some other precautions.
