No Time to Die 007 - Time to Go Broke

Pretty decent film. Probably one of the best Craig films.

Saw it yesterday. I have very mixed feelings. I’m not a super-bond fan so take my opinions lightly but I thought it was one of the better ones that I’d seen. As others have said in this thread I thought the pacing was really good - it didn’t feel anywhere near as long as it actually was. It was definitely better than most of the other Craig films (though not as good as Casino Royale). It was very visually appealing, I’ll give it that. The plot ran fine but it’s also just filled with baffling choices to the end. My biggest problem is just that the villain sucks. He’s bad. He has no compelling traits at all. The movie tries (I think????) to draw some kind of parallel with Bond but it doesn’t work at all so that whole section of the film falls flat on its face and it’s just ughhhhh.
Nomi is also really weird story-wise because it feels like she was going to have a whole section of the movie dedicated to her being all “girlboss female replacement next generation bond” sort of deal but it went over terribly so they cut it out in post. I actually don’t hate her character at all - I find most of her moments to be pretty okay, she wasn’t overly ridiculous to Bond and she clearly respected him (I find the moment when she gives him his number back one of the better ones). But, again, her whole character is really jarring because they were clearly going for something completely different that they cut out. I’m glad they cut it out because it seemed fucking terrible but as a result her character just has nowhere to go.
And finally, the decision to kill Bond. I really hate when series try to kill the very thing that made them appealing. Why is this such a thing now? Is it a symptom of the hateboner that a lot of Hollywood people seem to have for their audience? Obligatory why the fuck does this keep happening.

Cynicism and the Hollywood snobbish echo chamber.

I still think the only good Craig movie was Casino Royale.

Casino Royale isn't only good ... It's one of my favorite Bond movies ever. Definitely in my top 5.

I am so bummed with how the rest of Craig's movies went. Skyfall had a lot of great elements to it, but the runtime, man. The runtime really bogs it down in many ways ... Which is a shame, because I thought the performances were really good.

I saw Quantum of Solace only once, and I almost entirely forget that movie altogether because of how boring it was. And Spectre was just straight-up dogshit. Awful movie.

I really have no investment in No Time to Die at this point. I'm sure that I'll see it at some point, but that will probably be years from now, honestly.

I really don't get why people are acting as if Bond being killed is the death of the franchise. There has been no continuity between actors before, so it's not as if the character is being retired.
It's death in the way Rey Skywalker was the death of Star Wars. It will continue on as a zombie, but all the stupid bullshit that started with Skyfall and culminated in NT2D has thrown away decades of fandom and loyalty. It's just another stupid loud franchise now, like Fast & Furious or whatever stupid woke capeshit happens to be in theaters this week.

iirc bond never died, they just replaced the actor and shifted his story forward - it was kept intentionally ambiguous because it works better that way. so who will be the next bond? is bond a codename now too? might as well cast a girl and call her 001 (because it's obviously better than 7), because it doesn't really matter anymore.

The franchise has been ded since the end of Cold War...but yea, agree, theyre gonna dig it's corpse out for the third time in a few years.

The franchise should just stop being a "franchise" lol. And I mean in the sense that you hire an actor to play Bond and have him do several movies.

The classic Bond films Post-Dalton: Goldeneye & Casino Royale. That's it, the sequels with Brosnan are nearly unwatchable for me where Daniel Craig had a slow and truly disappointing decline although Skyfall nearly corrected course. While I respect EON for trying to have a full connected storyline with Craig's Bond it made things convoluted. Spectre especially I've said it once and I'll say it again they turned Blofeld into a cheesy Anime villian.

They would never put me in charge but I'd like to just have a different UK Actor play Bond every 3-4 years. I'd like to see Tom Hardy do a one and done Bond film. I'd like to see Henry Cavill especially after he was so good in Mission Impossible. Fuck it Idris Elba is factually a terrific actor let him be a black Bond for a movie.

I always saw the character's name as a code name anyway. Although I cannot think of a single plausible reason multiple secret agents would continuously order a shaken Martini because it completely ruins the drink by making it cloudy & diluted.

Just make sure they can pull off the suave attitude without looking like a baby. If they gut the character, the franchise will either die or go through a dark age again.

just give me a sequel to man from uncle already...

that's the problem when you try to explain stuff and continuity, in the end it doesn't really matter when it's all about some smooth ladykiller spy action saving the world and getting the girl. same way you don't want your see your hero get old officially (you can make up whatever you want after he rides off into the sunset), otherwise you get something like crystal skull...

Honestly, I feel that the recent Mission Impossible films have completely upstaged the latest Bond films in terms of action, suspense, and overall quality. While the latter is still acting like it's the mid-2000s and awkwardly trying to mesh the classic tropes with the new two-decade old gritty Jason Bourne type of spy flick, the former has figured out how to return to the more fun roots of its franchise while modernizing it in a way that doesn't rely on complete grimdark, while also going above and beyond in terms of stunts and setpieces.

Seriously, Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation, and Fallout completely embarrass the later Craig Bond films, it's not even funny.

And now Crystal Skull won't be the saddest movie in the franchise. Glad Steven Spielberg said "Fuck this shit I'm not directing" because the man shouldn't sully his legacy any further.

I guess it could always be worse, Hollywood ran the Pink Panther film series into the fucking ground. But I know damn well what they want and that's to make James Bond a Marvel style cinematic universe which will most likely be awful. BTW I will complement Spectre on this, the intro was brilliant, I am a total sucker for one continuous take scenes/films and that opening in Mexico City was beautiful. Hope Sam Mendes makes more movies like that because I absolutely adored 1917, perhaps my favorite War Film.

So funny that the one dud in the MI film series is Mission Impossible 3. And that was directed by the great hack himself JJ Abrams. Why couldn't Hollywood realize that that man is not a qualified director?

Re Brosnan, I ve always remembered him as Remington Steele first. IIRC the plots in that 2nd rate 80s TV series were way better written than the ones in Bond movies.

Interesting that you say that, as it is widely agreed that the dud in the series is Mission Impossible 2, not 3.

I will never not love John Woo films. MI2 is just over the top action. Yes it's not Face/Off but it's still a fun movie.

Mission Impossible 3 bored me to tears with the by the numbers romance. I guess I have to give credit to JJ because he's stayed producer and indeed it's amazing to realize that Tom Cruise has stayed an action star for over two decades now.

The problem with Bond is the series used to set trends but eventually started chasing them. I guess it worked with Moonraker, but Quantum of Solace was too Bourne-like for a lot of people, Skyfall was just a remake of TWINE spy version of the Dark Knight, and Skyfall and Spectre were just Denis Villaneuve shit. I guess that makes NT2D a Marvel ripoff and I don't care if you rate me autistic because it's true.

A trilogy really should be the max. Both Brosnan and Craig hated making them and it started showing after only a couple movies.
