As a first gen mexican-american, I agree with your statement that colonizers hyperinflate negative aspects of indegenious populations. I recognize that the Aztec culture had it's disgusting religious and patriarchal side that clamored for blood, but that isn't all there is to the culture. There's were amazing poets, philosophers, and scientists in Aztec culture as well. If the Aztecs were nothing but savages, then they wouldn't have developed such an astounding civilization in the first place.

Their religious practices shouldn't be a judgment against the entire culture, just like troonism shouldn't be a judgment against western culture. But still, cultural relativism isn't an excuse for those religious practices either.

I don't know enough about the crusades, though if you do want a good example of European barbarity, there's crucifixion and similar punishments.

That view of the Crusades is also simplified. By the time of the 1st Crusade in 1096 A.C.E, Muslim incursions into Europe were on ongoing thing, with Constantinople under constant threat until it finally fell in 1453 A.C.E. and all of Spain except the far northern region basically taken over in 718 A.C.E.
Although we don't hear about it too much on the news, the Arabs and Turks were into colonizing too!

To get back on topic, I think troons should go live in Muslim controlled countries for a bit and report back how much better they are than the horrible West.

You've gotten lots of good answers so far. The best example I can think of are the Buginese Bissu who were in fact shamans and sort of existed as a third gender. Of course, they weren't AGPs who were respected because of some magic gender spirit. Rather, they were invariably men who happened to take on some feminine traits as part of their job. First of all, my searches in Indonesian didn't yield very much, most of them referred back to English sources if they had any discussion on Bugis genders at all. This is especially true when discussing the FTM gender, calalai (literally "false men"). The impression that I'm getting is that it isn't so much a third gender (or 5th as it may be) but just a word that means "butch lesbian" and that literally no one treats them as anything other than weird women (they have no special role in Bugis society for instance and usually aren't strong enough to work men's jobs).
