I can't imagine anyone worse for a "mass appeal social media campagin" when Ollie is so uniquely unappealing. He's shrill and awkward to look at, he keeps putting his foot in it with his clumsy attempts at activism and his videos have started turning off even his loyal simps due to their lack of meaningful substance.

Even the approach is a bit wild, because Ollie doesn't talk about objective medical science, he talks about subjective interpretations of reality and rarely comes to a concrete conclusion. He specifically advocates against evidence based approaches in healthcare scenarios, stating that medical professionals should be disregarded and trans people should just get to decide what trans healthcare looks like - not really a good approach for tackling an anti-vaxx sentiment. It's not really anything like any of his other videos.

The only bit that does make sense is this leak is supposedly from February 2021, when he'd just come out and received a massive (temporary) popularity boost and media attention, and it was before he really said or did any dumb shit. Given in November (prior to omicron) it leaked the government had been planning Operation Rampdown to remove all testing and self isolation requirements in time for April 2022, it would appear that any plan to use Ollie to boost covid restriction compliance was largely abandoned in the planning stages. Although there's something fishy about this leak that makes me doubt its providence.

Flying back to America so soon after his last trip? Interesting. Not sure why he'd return to the UK for just a few weeks when he's professionally free until February, but I guess it was wrong of me to assume any sense of frugality on his part.

The bit about gaining weight makes it sound like fat transfer — like a BBL or something of that type. Sometimes patients are asked to gain weight to supply more fat for the procedure, especially as retention at the injection site tends to be incomplete. But I don't think that's an outpatient procedure for cis people. Maybe that conversation with his physician was about a different surgery (how many surgeries does he want?), or maybe just bullshit to spice up his anti-NHS crusade.

rugby is one of those things with loads of different sorts of leagues- touch leagues and mixed leagues - which would be a good place to play.

So when Olly uses a work about the experience of being a black woman (amongst other things) in direct comparison to his transness in his coming out video, it's fine. But when Lindsay Ellis caveats using the Isabel Fall stuff in her statement by saying she's referring strictly to the experience of online harassment to demonstrate how she interprets the way it functions, not about the trans stuff, that's bad? I'm not a fan of Ellis's work; I find it to be intellectually dishonest and I think she should have unplugged a long time ago if what happened several months ago is still getting to her this much (just hire someone to run your social media in accordance with your contractual obligations and get offline.)

Olly better hope his "generous friend" who has "helped his career" doesn't see his own close friend with whom he makes content retweeting (what I find to be) unfair and disingenuous (mis)interpretations of how Ellis used references in her statement now that Ellis has gone offline. Olly's tweet sounds like someone who isn't close to Ellis trying to be neutral enough publicly to continue their working relationship (with the audiobooks mainly, and my guess is that's a contractual thing too.) And if Olly wants to continue pursuing traditional forms of media (Film/TV, etc.) then he better tell his pal to knock it off. These sorts of industry circles are tight knit and Ellis has solid connections. Those connections are not going to want to work with someone whose close friends/colleagues publicly clown around like this. I can't guarantee that would happen obviously, but if I were Olly I would be a bit nervous about the sort of company I keep if I'm trying to make career gains.

I'm not trying to fight on Ellis's behalf or anything (I'm with FaxMachine on that,) but her statement was clearly written from a pretty dark place to anyone with basic reading comprehension and yet these people are choosing to continue to mob her on Twitter when the point is moot and Ellis has chosen to go offline. Kicking someone when they explicitly articulate they're down is tactless and certainly doesn't make Ellis look like the asshole in this situation.

I don't think Ollie actually read the 2,000 word letter to the internet - it's more likely that someone let him know "Oh, Lindsay left the internet because she was exhausted by all the harassment and dogpiling, I think she's quitting YouTube" and he thought "ta babes, I'll make a post". Especially from the way he talks about "oh good, she'll have some time off" and left it there. Although then again, narcissists famously lack empathy and struggle with theory of mind.

The surface narrative is that Lindsay said Raya and the Last Dragon ripped off Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Twitter declared this racist because only a racist would lump together two different Asian flavored animated fantasy adventures. Dumb take because Raya was inspired by Avatar, conceptually and aesthetically, and I wish it would have taken more inspiration because Avatar was good and Raya could have been.

The deeper story is that Lindsay had an annoying Twitter persona — smug, opinionated, sanctimonious, thin skinned, dismissive of pushback even when it was thoughtful and well spoken — so people grew to resent her and root for her fall by any sword. Raya was just the tweet that happened to drop when the backlash was due to explode. When given a chance, even for a dumb reason, people who’d disliked her personality all along were happy to drag her morality through the mud.

I’m not saying it’s right, but it’s more complicated than “she was cancelled for ONE TWEET” as her fans and anti woke enemies would have you believe.

She loves a big stick as long as she isn’t on the business end of it. Even upon learning how it feels for herself, she’s quick to beat on others who Deserve™ to be hit. She, of course, deserves only grace. Lindsay is the protagonist and as such could never be flawed on a fundamental level.
