Remote access generally has a lot more moving parts, and so, more surface area to attack. If you've got a website (for example), you could find exploits in the pages themselves, database injection, if traffic is being routed from through Ukraine through Russia you could try a man in the middle attack. Not saying that's the scenario here, but.

Try to physically steal well secured hardware, you don't have any of that anymore. Proper (PROPER) full disk encryption is nearly impossible to break even in normal usage. If you destroy the keys or (in some cases) the headers, that data is fucking GONE.
