As someone who has done both, and also lived in the West, "quality of life" as a metric simply means how fancy of a car you can afford and how many times a month you can afford to make a steak dinner.

The difference is not necessarily that massive. Is overall quality of life worse in Russia or China? Sure. But living in those countries isn't the hell hole death world experience people seem to make it out to be. Not everyone is dirt poor and wishing for death there. People have normal lives. Just slightly less materialistic ones.
