Saints Row thread

This thread is quite the depressing read, don't get hyped or have hope for much of anything anymore. Can't even muster up the idea that even though the game won't have any of the crass humor supposedly because "the social culture has outgrown it " (bullshit) that it'll at least be playable if you mute the sound, put on a soundtrack from the older games and just blast shit.

I did like the levels where you had to physically injure yourself for cash in the first Saints Row

The only thing I hated about those missions is the fact that the streets (in particular, the streets the game gave you the bonuses on) would mysteriously be devoid of cars during the missions.

Other than that, this mission and the Septic Avenger missions were an absolute hoot. The Bodyguard missions had their moments, too. For 3, as frustrating as it could be, I really enjoyed Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax.

Besides Insurance Fraud and the Septic Avenger, my favorite was Fuzz. There's something very fun about playing a reality show cop and beating down civvies with it.

Mayhem was fun but hectic too.

Oh man, Fuzz. Instantly I remember the mission where the dispatcher comes on saying "we have reports of pirates fighting ninjas" and the mission objective changed to something like "stop the greatest battle of all time." Saint's Row 2 was special.

I miss when Saints Row had that whimsical and over the top nature, watch the new game take itself way too seriously.

I'm telling you guys, it'll end up outdated and embarrassing far faster than what Volitions perceives of the older games.

You'd think that they would have learned from the first one, when THAT game kinda tried taking itself too seriously and came off as a ripoff of GTA. It wasn't until the second one where it really leaned into the ridiculousness and over-the-top hijinks that the series is (was) well-known for and made it a viable alternative to the melodramatic direction the GTA series seemed to be going in at the time with IV.

You'd think developers would realize that the most consistently-beloved wide open crime sandbox games are the ones that are more-or-less affectionate parodies of the genre. GTA: VC/SA, Saints Row 2/3...what do those all have in common? The story was basically just a light excuse for letting you out in the world and just going nuts in it.

I never understood why Fuzz never made a comeback in The Third. There's a police outfit you can get from Let's Pretend so it's not like they didn't have a uniform ready to go. And considering how The Third was meant to be "wacky and crazy" by Volition, it's weird that the activity like Fuzz was skipped over for more milquetoast activities like Heli Assault.

Plus, you got to beat up protesters in Fuzz, and if modern police tactics have taught us anything, it's that police jump at the chance to beat up protesters.

Who knows why The Third didn't feature Fuzz, but it sure as shit won't show up in the new game in the era of ACAB and BLM.

Don't expect Escort for being "misogynist", Septic Avenger for being "childish", or even Professor Genki for being "racist".

The only edge the new game will have is against the "acceptable" targets, otherwise it's going to be as spicy as oatmeal.

I watched some videos of people reacting to the Saints Row reveal and the general consensus is that it's pretty cringe

When people are thinking the trailer is for a Ubisoft game at first and only when things start going further south they realize it's a Saints Row game the producers should be mortally ashamed, I'm dumbfounded they didn't do a test audience to gauge the reaction.

If Saints Row had balls, it would satirize the political undertones of police brutality AND reckless protesting. It is certainly possible.
I highly doubt current Volition would have the balls to take a swipe at "peaceful protests" beyond a playful jab at best.

Indeed, I wouldn't put it past them to shoehorn in BLM against Marshal in a hamfisted attempt to critique "systemic racism".

The game is going to have as much subtlety as a sledgehammer to the face but will treat its "lessons" dead seriously.
