I've been engaging in some world building for my series and trying to come up with an alternate political ideology to place that world into a protected cold war with "the alliance". Then it struck me, wouldn't it be a kick if Bob's personal beliefs could be turned into a semi-functional ideology partly inspired by technocracy combined with eugenics and a dash of consumerism for the proles/serfs. I'm thinking of something akin to S.M. Stirling's Draka and 1984.

Well, I did it. I wrote it as part of a timeline in bullet point form, but enjoy a background character inspired by our very own Bob. It was good for a laugh.

Look, Alan Moore is a bit of a tit, great writer (even if he has a LOT of turkeys as well) and yada yada yada, but it's better to no hang on his every word, there is a lot of ass talking whenever these "creatives" who buy into their own hype start digging for these contemplative "deep" quotes.

And Alan Moore sure as fuck buys into his own hype.

But I think at least some on the intention of the quote does have some value. If we ignore the condescending part of "The artist knows better" type of crap, and focus a bit on "giving what the audience wants", Yeah, just plain obvious pandering, or churning out safe crowdpleasing stories ain't the best way to go for both artists and audience, it is a loss for both sides.

But to challenge and turn conventional storytelling ain't something easy to do either, and if you gonna do it, be prepared to fail and get a bloddy nose and just don't be grudge the audiences for not getting it.

Also, "art" per si ain't just to be defiant of "conventions", most classical stories are classical for following a classical structure, and so the artist wants to tell his story in the post polished and conventional way for broad apeal, but the inspiration and cleverness comes from the quality of the dialogue, the interesting scenarios, the captivating characters and in the end bad guy loses and good guys wins, just as the audience wants it, but a good artist make it so it comes deserved and satisfying and in the end everybody wins.

So yeah... Alan Moore has a point, but he is a dildo and don't take his word with much weight, he is just a man who said a lot of stupid shit over the years.

Yup. It seems like now that we have the internet, the narrativistic genome has been thrown open to even the most basic user, while before it was the sole domain of critics. As a result we tend to thumb our noses at something that just works and overly fetishize novelty. Like a fantasy game where the warrior is a warfighter, the rogue is a shadow dancer, and the mage is a magus. We know damn well what you mean, just stop with the novelty for the sake of it. Too many people want to innovate but forget the all-important rule of "don't fuck up what you have"

Also I noticed something specifically with some of the Rian Johnson interviews. He was very smug about the whole "Not everyone's gonna like it and that's good ehehehehe" thing. Then it hit me. That man is such a beta that he's hedging his bets. If everyone ended up loving it no one would care, but now that he said that he looks prescient. Sort of the equivalent of hitting on a woman then claiming you're kidding when you get felted. Knowing what a low-T fag he is, I'd bet money he's done that too.

New Patreon numbers are out. If I wasn't 100% on the idea that his numbers are fudged, I am now. His subscriber count has trended downward yet he just got a $100 boost. He's done nothing but lost relevancy as a content creator yet only gained notoriety as a lolcow and I'm supposed to believe he's making what he did in 2015? Remember 2015 was the same year of his Pixels review, the literal height of his career.

My current theory is that roughly $3000 is coming in from other sources, since it has literally never dipped below that magic number. If you want a more realistic count, take the current count and subtract 3000. It's easy enough for me to buy he pulls in 1000-1500 a month, as even Spoony still gets a few bucks on people that just don't watch their bank statements. North of 3000 continuously is a bigger fantasy than his space copium.

I wouldn't put it past a number of his sycophants to up their monthly pledges though that number is weird.

I went back and looked and I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. He wouldn't pick a fight with that one black buy until the end of the month. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some discord Bob set up for his true and honest fans where he has them self dox like DSP and he cried about his finances. That first jump is a jump of $141 and a loss of one patron. What's extra weird, to me at least, is you can see that big drop in patrons followed by some fluctuation but his earnings have a steady and gentle decline. There's a point where his patrons increase but his earnings decrease.

The funny answer, and one that's not possible, to all of this is that Bob and Lesser Brother are laundering movie money into Bob's patreon.

Bob's number bounce around so much that sites have issues with a accurate count. Here's a screenshot of Bob's Patreon about two weeks or so ago:

I expect his monthly hand-out to increase to $3,300 by the end of the month only for it to dip again in June.

I covered this bounce in a previous post, and my best conclusions on it were that it was either a dumb fan with more dollars than sense "rewarding" Bob a couple days late for his refusal to review the latest Fantastic Beasts movie, or it was Bob pumping his numbers. It does stand out as a particularly high jump, especially since he ended up going down in total patrons that day.

Furthermore, remember that Graphtreon only updates once a day, so that's why there's a mismatch between its current value and what's shown on Patreon. It's also normal for Bob's funds to dip at the beginning of every month as credit cards expire or pledges run out, usually in the area of about $50 and twenty patrons. As I said before, watch for a corresponding massive dip to see when this particular patron cancels their pledge.

As it happens, while looking at the graph again, I noticed a similar spike in January. Gained two patrons, but went up $92 in a day. As before, there's nothing in Bob's output that really stands out as having gotten a lot of traction around that time, so your guess is as good as mine why someone would fork over that much (late Christmas present, maybe). Haven't seen a dip quite that large yet, so either the patron slowly lowered their pledge over time, or they're still giving him a ridiculous amount monthly.

The other alternative, of course, is that Bob is willfully inflating his own numbers, but let's not forget that there are people even dumber than him out there that are happy to open their wallets for the Footless Fuhrer.

So when they saw the fuck up, then the talks about "yeahhh, it might not be for everybody" started. If you gonna "deny" what the audiences wants, at the very least you need to give them something else, otherwise you are just wasting everybody's time.

Modern filmmakers are in a position where they "know the song but not the words"

They know the emotional response an audience has to a twist ending or a shocking development, and want to evoke it, such being the hallmarks of a good movie. But utterly fail because they don't have the skill or know-how to set it up and pull it off.

They have the last line all figured out, but, don't know how to get audiences invested in the story so that it has meaning.

Rey just claiming she's a Skywalker now at the end probably sounded like it'd resonate like "Luke, I AM your FATHER" in their heads, and they don't know why we, the audience, don't agree... the "parts" are all there, like gears scattered on a floor, can't we just, y'know, make them mesh for the director? But give him all the credit too?


It's the IRL version of Homer looking at the mess he made trying to put together a barbecue grill, and comparing it to the picture in the manual, and whining "why doesn't MINE look like that?!" - They did all the things! They had out-of-nowhere surprises! They had cameos! They had character deaths! They wanted to blow up whole planets that are key parts to the franchise lore (but were stopped)! Yeah, making a bad movie is a subversion of audience expectations, nobody gives up 2 hours and 50 bucks in concessions hoping to see a movie try and fail to weave a story.
