What are your restaurant red flags?

Less of a red flag and more of an open question to the thread:

Is it a sign that a restaurant is going under if they advertise a ton of special deals on social media? Limited time free fries with your order, special lunch combos on certain days, limited time deserts, etc. There’s a burger place two counties over from me whose fried chicken sandwiches I really, really like and I follow them on Instagram, but I worry that all the posting about these deals is a desperate attempt to stay afloat and the business is hemmhoraging money.

I don’t wanna lose my burger place bros. It’s clean, homely and the owner runs the counter and she seems like a nice lady.

I do eat there still, but I can’t visit as often as I could anymore because I no longer work in that general area and it’s a 40 mile round trip. It’s more of a celebration/self-care thing now. I’m still worried though.

I don't bother going to Italian restaurants/trattorias at all. They literally have nothing I cannot make myself (that I would eat) and make much better. And get fucked if you think I'm going to pay $25+ for a pasta dish.

They basically went away overnight where I am the week the mandate got lifted, but there's a handful of establishments that still enforce them, namely bars. Frankly I can't understand why the few places that card you at the door continue to do so, but I really hope they don't continue because it sets a precedent that this kind of discriminatory bullshit is still acceptable after we all learned the hard way that covid is not worth tanking our economies.

I don't bother going to Italian restaurants/trattorias at all. They literally have nothing I cannot make myself (that I would eat) and make much better. And get fucked if you think I'm going to pay $25+ for a pasta dish.

What rubs me the wrong way about American trattorias are that they betray the core purpose of a trattoria in Italy, which is to serve inexpensive, simple food. Even by NYC standards, trattoria food is disgustingly overpriced. I'm getting a better authentic Italian experience at a family-run pizzeria in Jersey where half the kitchen staff are Hondourans.

Go to the UK or Australia or Canada or NZ and you will find all and I mean all "Italian" (run by Greeks, half the time) places are trying to charge you 5 star prices for a bowl of spaghetti or a Margherita pizza. Absolute nonsense. They buy their spaghetti from a commercial supplier; it's not like any of them even make it themselves.

As someone who used to work in restaurants i'd say check between booth chairs as you wont believe how much food ends up in between the chairs.
