AFAICT, Japan is the only non-Western civilization/country to modernize and industrialize on their own terms without being colonized. Perry did force the country open, but once they were open they sent out people to see how Westerners did things and brought those lessons (and often Western experts) back and integrated them into Japanese society, leading to them becoming a legitimate world power within 50 years.

I was randomly watching a documentary on Baked Alaska tonight and it had a bunch of footage of the 2016 election era that made me feel something inside. Watching it made me incredibly nostalgic for how much fun this all used to be. Shitposting and laughing about politics just isn't the same anymore. Trannies and dragshows for children just is too depressing to laugh at. Since Trump left office it's just been so bleak and humorless it sucks. That 2015-2017 era was some of the best I've ever had shitposting

I feel the same. What really took the wind out of my sails was seeing how obsessed the Republican Party became with ensuring that they crippled the Trump administration, prevented their voters from having a say in the party, and kept the government's priorities on anything and everything but what is good for actual Americans. Whether it was the FBI getting caught lying in court, or antifa/BLM burning down city blocks, the GOP was far more concerned with exploiting the crisis to damage Trump than it was with, you know, what anybody who votes for that worthless party wants.

I've been trying to figure out the same thing, especially given it was only adopted in 2015, which gives it a fairly short deadline. Best I can figure is that it's building on agenda 21, which was a non-binding set of sustainable development goals that was originally adopted in 1992 (giving it a 30 year deadline). With that foundation behind it, suddenly it makes a lot more sense as being a delay rather than a ratcheting up. Their sustainability plans were supposed to be in place by 2022 at the latest.

Now I've thought about that, it makes me more confident that they're going to fuck it up again, with most of the impetus for the whole thing dying off with its OG advocates. The downside being, of course, all the damage they'll do to the rest of us in the process of crashing and burning.

Oh I’m sure in this particular instance it was more ‘bad form’ than any insult worth retaliation.
