Oh god fucking KJ. My mother was a bus driver for the local public school district a decade or so ago, that had to transport their special needs children because district borders. Many of them ended up not getting a state education or having to pay for private transport because parents refused to let their male children on a bus driven by a woman.

I had never heard of this place. It's just north of the NYC metroplex. I'll dive down this rabbit hole later today, because I have other things I need to do first.

A friend of a friend had a very sick little girl. I'm not sure exactly what all she had wrong with her, but I know she had a tumor and her organs were shutting down. Before that she was a happy normal toddler. For weeks in the hospital her family didn't know how much longer they had with her.
Until one day, when her parents got the news that another child around her age had sadly passed on, and his parents had decided to donate his organs to help other children.

The surgery was a success and 3 years later the little girl is thriving.

Every time I think of Archie's situation I can't help but think of all the children he could have helped if his mother hadn't dragged this on so long so she could watch his body decay in a hospital bed.

Their attitude is really admirable, and heart-breaking. I can’t even imagine losing a kid and having to make that decision. Kudos to them, honestly. I hope that little girl lives a long and happy life.

I had some training with a man with DMD - 35 years old.
Completely dependent, but could use his fingers enough to play video games on his computer. Ventilator and tracheostomy.
Intelligent, kind and patient enough to be a guinea pig for us learn endotracheal aspiration techniques. Essentially suctioning crap out of a tracheostomy.
The guy straight up let us shove a tube down his windpipe because it would help other people.
Cool guy. Probably dead now.

I went to school with a boy who had DMD. He sadly passed away before I graduated.

I only formally met him a few times because he was in the special needs program, but I would often see him in between classes. He was always laughing, singing, or some combination of the two. His presence always made the day easier.

One thing that sticks with me is the image of his huge red cheeks, which at the time I thought must’ve been caused by all the smiling he did. Looking back, it was probably caused in part by steroids and made especially apparent because the rest of his body was so tiny in comparison to his head. Regardless, I still think that in spite of his muscular dystrophy, he built the strongest smiling muscles I’ve seen on a person.

But obviously, disabled people are not just real-life symbols for able-bodied people to philosophize over. Disabled children are not just motifs for parents to highlight in Youtube vlogs/Instagram reels/etc. and otherwise neglect.

To all the Britney Morrows of the world: How much precious time with your child are you willing to sacrifice in order to ‘educate’ the public about his or her disease?

As demonstrated by Dave from the SBSK video GenociderSyo linked, not every person diagnosed with a deadly disease dies before his or her life expectancy date. Here, we don’t really talk about disabled children with terminal diseases who are high functioning (or, functioning period… RE: tard babies) but it’s worth remembering that many of these children are also exploited by their parents for Internet fame.

Some of those parents will bury those children and patronizingly reminisce about them on Facebook, those lost Babes in the Wood, who finally found their way to Heaven and took their rightful place on God’s lap as angels or some shit.

But then again, some of those children will grow up to live independent of their parents and reminisce about how instead of allowing them a proper childhood, — the only time when their condition was not so severe as it is now, and they could have discovered what it felt like to play — instead, their parents capitalized off of them and actually disabled them even further.

The point is, either way, these social media parents are sacrificing a relationship with their children even and especially if they grow into adulthood.

Damn, making me ugly cry here. This is my biggest issue with how Archies body is currently being desecrated as well. What Hollie will never understand is the feeling that I've seen parents of children who has had their organs donated after their death describe; a feeling that their child gets to live on through another. That their death has stopped another one will not take away the grief, but might provide at least some sense of meaning to such a tragedy. Hollie will never experience that, only sadness and anger, and it's all her fault for being such a selfish bitch.

I saw an article saying he had traveled to Poland recently, in addition to being unvaccinated, but can't find that article. He's no longer contagious.

given the number of woo moms in the region, it could spread. luckily not that far, most people are vaccinated as kids and that herd immunity will give some protection. similar to the measles-at-disney story.

I had an uncle who survived it, months in the iron lung, had a stroke, fucked his body up proper, and he was considered lucky. I think the only reason he made it is he was a massively strong boy and had family to support him through it. Lots of children were basically abandoned to the states care if they came down with polio.
He kept on & became a successful MD, even had affairs and divorces somehow.
This photo is pretty famous, and represents one of the better facilities of the time.
I wonder what polio treatment would look like today on a large scale such as this.
What gives people the right to be so selfish as to choose to put others at risk like this?

Our local sexual abuse expert retired some years ago. As one could imagine, she spent far too much of her time dealing with parents going through messy divorces, and usually the mother who took the kid(s) there, HOPING their STBX had abused them. Sick, sick, sick.


Someone (maybe it was you) posted links and pictures to an Egyptian medical website where similar things were going on in some of their insular communities. The same thing is going on in the U.S. and Canada, in some of the Mennonite and Amish communities.

Parts of the Canadian prairie, and northern U.S., have significant populations of a group called the Hutterites, and there's an unwritten rule that when the population in a community reaches 150, the group must split. There is some evidence done by anthropologists that our primitive ancestors appeared to do something similar.

I grew up very near a Hutterite community. Their contributions to the local farmer's markets were extraordinary. Their community has all the issues any Anabaptist sect does, but they did always seem friendly and open to answering questions about their culture.

All the talk about inbreeding among religious communities reminded me of a pediatric genetics clinic in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania called the Clinic for Special Children. The County is home to many Old Order Amish and Mennonite "plain people", with a high incidence of otherwise incredibly rare genetic disorders. Back in the 1980s, a pediatrician was completing his residency at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, which is among the best facility of its kind in the world. He diagnosed an Amish child with a rare metabolic disorder called glutaric acidemia, and recognized the need for a clinic to provide care for these children with exceedingly rare diseases while also maintaining sensitivity to their religious beliefs. For the record, Old Order Amish and Mennonites will accept technology and interact with the English for this purpose.

Anyway, the Clinic is really interesting, and I thought some people might be interested in their list of disorders and which populations are known to have been affected. They have a list of publications, as well.

There's a similar clinic that was profiled on "60 Minutes" a while back; IIRC, it was in Ohio. Several Amish people went on camera to talk about their families' issues, and they allowed the crew to film a fundraising auction.

The Amish were regularly patients at the hospital where I used to work. They seldom had insurance, but always found a way to pay the bill, usually through their own variations on crowdfunding (which is really what insurance is in the first place).
