Plagued /r/TNOmod and the Reddit HOI4 modding community - When a subreddit for a video game mod turns to utter insanity

Let's hope they deliver. My impression is that EsoNaz Argentina won't disappoint, but will prove to be short-lived and probably receive the TNO failstate treatment. Consider that, nowadays, the TNO design philosophy consists of bluntly informing the player that what they want is not possible, even if all the creative tools to accomplish it (in varying levels of difficulty) are there. And, even then, content keeps getting reworked into blandness, excised before we can even imagine it being somewhere above that. I don't only think "succeeding" as Isabel/Lopez Rega will be impossible; I think you won't even be able to tour around their failure much and will end up swallowing a railroaded storyline headed towards whatever's next. I don't mind particularly insane paths having it rough or near impossible, but I would like to see the player in a position to push against this in meaningful or at least more flavorful ways. Hitting a narrative brick wall seems to me like poor, and perhaps lazy, design.

I have no faith in whatever they bring forward, man. It won't be bad, but I believe we're at the point of mediocrity being expectable. Though, who knows? It's been two years since CRF, which was never intended as a major update. We have nothing to actually grasp what they're gunning for with all these reworks and creative shifts. I'm not denying a good result is possible, but I am saying optimism here is without base.
the only thing i find potentially interesting is the little cold war between brazil and argentina, but thats really it. what tno desperately needs to do is flesh out the superpowers: finish the OFN gui/mech, give japan full content, make the superpowers interact more, ect. tno might not be conventional hoi4, but that doesnt mean it has to be boring piles of events and buttons.

TNO is removing Burgundy due to the control of the pro-communist Italian team (which is a huge clique within the mod). Will the Russian unifiers be next making all the unique elements of TNO completely gone?

I hate that kind of thought forcing the player to choose the choice they want instead of letting the player choose what they want (Sorry you need to literally fail in eveything to get your Leevil Fascist but the wholoseme chungus commie is always around if you want),a great example of this is eliminating the Vanilla Politics system with buttons and waiting,Rise of Nations (The mod not the game)fixes this by letting you know that you have X possibilities and create what you want (Yes you can make your le Epic American Civil War and choose any option),Making Peron Esoteric Nazism would only work in the 70s(Which it seems they will never reach) for example of this kind of ideas they have
And idf they care so much about the VN ideas they have,why not also made them actually influential (I still remember more the Fascist Vladivostok guy event about his pet than any Of the crazy shit they made for Japan) like Making your leader evolve or change his ideology over time if they really want the full VN stuff.

I remember showing my one friend that Italy has like 5 different ways to go communist and their AI somehow heavily leans for them to go that way. Was told "You'd be forgiven if you thought the Axis powers won in this timeline."

Its just going to be a general bitch rant from me now but that is one of the things I hate about TNO. Socialism and Communism should be discarded ideals in their timeline. The one and only Socialist state got fucking crushed by fascism. Not even a bitter fight to the last man either. They were woefully unprepared and just got fucking crushed. In spite of this you have so many socialist movements that can crop up. Including the restoration of the USSR which depending on the unifier can create a bigger communist faction than the IRL Warsaw pact.

Probably because those paths are more interesting than boooooring democracy mechanics in TNO even if they are cliche. People ultimately play HOI4 to wage wars n' shit because its a strategy war game. If people want a political simulator they just play one. At least those paths are suited towards waging wars and forming alliances and not reading another boring event about woah haha quirky politician at it again.

I remember years ago asking a developer on the discord if the USA would support communist regimes in Latin America similarly how they supported "fascist" regimes in real life. I thought it would have been a fun quirk of the TNO timeline. But nope.

Remember that in the cancelled(?) TNO2 the USA would have threatened to nuke Russia if they invaded Moscow.

Seems like the devs wanted The USA to be as idiotic as the Nazis whenever they're led by presidents that lean even a bit in the wrong direction.

There are twice as much Socialist/Communist subideologies as there are Fascist/NS ones.

This just shows the lack of imagination these people have. They import Socialist/Communist strains from real life and pretend they’d be just as relevant in TNO. TNO isn’t just an Axis victory mod it’s a mod where the Axis rule 2/3 of the world. There should be all kinds of Fascist/Nazi strains in such a scenario. Like “Liberal Fascism”, “Fascism with a human face” or Fascism made to appeal to non-European cultures like “Arab Fascism” etc. This doesn’t exist aside from a couple of meme subideologies like “Ordosocialism”.

I don’t mind the existence of Communist/Socialist nations but due to the scenario at hand they should take a backseat to Fascism

The US does back Castro, the communists in Colombia and also back the ANC if South Africa chooses the anti apartheid path aswell as the Communists in Indonesia,Malaysia and can ally with them in the Philippines war. Good relations also can be established with communist russian unifiers.

I have to disagree on the art style part for TNO. For one, I would hardly call the TNO "style" realistic, given the very poor quality of the colourisation on most pictures and reliance on reds and greys. Like these pictures are hardly coloured like real humans. The images either have too much or too little contrast and they rely on a ton of background blur.

I think these are far worse compared to the portraits in the style that has been semi-recently done by Kaiserreich, which looks decently nice when done right in my opinion. These aren't always fully realistic either but they look a lot better than whatever shit TNO usually has.

However, I do think I agree with most of what you've said on the other points, especially with regards to narrative and gameplay, and the fucking overreliance on scripted GUIs for everything.
I hate base Kaiserreich now and it's ben a while since I played Redux but I've always appreciated the portrait work the Kaiserdev team does. It's all excellent quality even if they make questionable decisions on what to allow in portraits.
They made a public statement that Long Yun was getting reworked (for the third time), but his rebellion won't get removed for now.
He's been reworked? So he is no longer genocide all Chinese collaborators now because we need our wacky resistance leader to be fucking insane?

It doesn't even make sense. Mittelafrika is a conglomerate of loosely tied colonies under one government. All the Anglo and native chiefdoms have levels of autonomy so it makes sense the head of the colonial governments would be titled state-holder. Honestly the only reason they won't remove Goering is because he is legacy content and they know they will make a shitstorm happen if they do.

Some of them are stupid and make no sense like Maoism still exists. When trying to justify it the devs just said that Maoism just became a thing still despite him being killed by the Japanese just because ok? Stalinism is also still a thing for some reason.
