Lucas did not have the funds for cocaine addiction and repeated overdoses when he was younger. Cocaine toxicity with fatal and near-fatal consequences is possible[1] but it is not likely to be what Lucas is referring to above. Most people who overdose on cocaine generally take themselves to the emergency department because they can do so, they are conscious and ambulatory and generally don't describe themselves as "almost dying". Certainly, they feel distressed and confused but don't feel that their life is slipping away. The near-death that Lucas is referring to is the loss of consciousness that comes from a heroin overdose. The "phenomenology" or first-person subjective experience of a person experiencing a cocaine overdose is "I am losing my mind". That of the person's experiencing a heroin overdose is "I am going to die", just before slipping out of consciousness. The sentiment that comes with post-naloxone revival of the person that had overdosed on heroin is "I almost died."
