It happens a lot. It wasn't something I ever saw in the city, but since I've moved out into semi-rural Arkansas? It's almost routine. The part that sucks is when they're in shitty trailer parks that cram them in, and the fire hops between a few units. There's a park on my street that's half burnt down at this point. Tweakers and old alcoholics falling asleep with a ciggy seem to be what causes most of it. But no one is going to pay Dalton to come out and hurt himself on their property though, when there are insured scrappers who own the needed equipment already.
It seems to be a white trash thing. Most crackers usually try and claim some Native heritage, or talk about their Cherokee princess great great grandma. It usually gets trotted out when they're trying to explain why saying nigger isn't racist and the blacks aren't the only ones who have experience discrimination rotfl. Usually the reality is the ancestor was just a black person, but Natives are a little more palatable, so they get retconned. The closer you get to Oklahoma the more likely there is to be some ancestry. But in central AR, white trash is probably just white trash.
