It's nothing like the S-300, the Russian equivalent of the Hawk is the Buk system.

I'm pretty sure the "motorola 256-bit encrypted" is someone spouting off buzz words. Motorola's government service branch is the main manufacturer of US's wireless communications equipment (radios). Motorola Radios were digital not just for walkie talkies, so you could tx/rx data directly. Its possible if its COTS they were modified or flashed/hacked to access the naughty spectrums.

If they are able to get good packet capture for storage/replay they are probably able to decrypt comms in a couple days/hours. Real time would be where I'd be a little sus.

You're right. I was trying to think of something old but still viable.
Though I don't think Buks can integrate in an S-300/400 battery.

They can integrate with the S-300 with the help of a Polyanda-D4

Unlike the Hawk which has been phased out, the Buk is still receiving upgrades, so both systems are old but the Buk is a bit more viable in it's m3 configuration, and it always was more mobile than the semi-mobile Hawk system.

Ukraine's a big country, bad old shit is still pretty useful to cover all that airspace, especially if the west can supply the missiles ad infinitum. I'm guessing for Taiwan this is just an opportunity to upgrade to something newer, given the real fear of Chinaman. Considering there's an obvious interest in keeping Taiwan a thorn in China's side, their burger friends probably gave them an excellent deal on some fancy new AA, with the cost partially written off by taking these old ones and covered by the Ukraine support budget.

The Armchair Historian channel did a video on the development of the Ukrainian military since the Soviet fall. They do simple animated videos about historical stuff, not always military-related - like OverSimplified but not comedic. They go over weapons, recruitment and drafting, modernization and anti-corruption programs, and so on. Probably nothing new if you're one of the smarter people in this thread, but I (not being one of those people) learned some things.

So it's not that they can do it on general principle, but that they did it at least once (stated by the Ukrainians, perhaps they got the information another way).

How the Ukrainians knew the Russians knew isn't said but later in the document they write this:

It was actually pretty hard to get info on Ukrainian comms. I was able to pick up this internet archive from the start of the war:

According to this article (which isn't official news, so I'm taking this with a grain of salt) Ukraine's foot soldiers are using Motorola DP2400 for communication. This is a digital device, so they aren't transmitting their voice unfiltered like a ham radio. But my cursory glance of the specs says nothing of encryption, amd the specification of the standard it uses doesn't say one word about encryption either. So maybe Russia was just able to listen to otherwise encoded comms.

Before Kharkiv offensive vatniggers have routinely bombed Kharkiv with cluster munitions, especially Saltivka area. You are encouraged to look up the pictures from it right now. It's like Bakhmut in miniature.

Excellent autistic detective work.
I looked at Motorola's site and the DP2400 offers something called "Basic Privacy" with an option for handsets to have "Enchanced Privacy". It looks like this involves scrambling packets over the bandwidth of the selected channel. So no encryption, but dedicated intercept is needed.
tl;dr: Russian OSINT is able to watch cable titty channels.
