Starfield - Bethesda's new space IP: will probably be full of fun and easily trackable bugs

How do you think Starfield will turn out?

Firefly, BSG, Starsector, Eclipse Phase (effectively), Brigador. There are dozens of ways you can write humanity spreading out into the stars and forming their own nations and societies and ideologies; without it being dull and dry. Starfield is just dull.
I'm not saying you can't do it, just that Bethesda isn't equipped for it, and their decision to make it so grounded is boring as fuck.
what took the game so long?
Them trying to get random generation and flying vehicles to work in their busted fucking engine coded by incompetent morons. And as is the trend with everything bought by Microsoft they were totally hands off for years so the higher ups just fucked off for years on Microdick money. Bet the whole game was cobbled together in that last year.
I've noticed that only with this game do you have people coming out of the woodwork whenever you mention their engine being 20 year old duct tape
Here is the thing. Could a competent team with lots of knowledge and good programmers make the creation engine into something that is functionally as good as any other engine? Maybe. Can Bethesda's team of morons and (in the case of the animation lead) literal college dropouts who happen to be friends with Todd make it work?

No.

This writing is seriously becoming Outer Worlds level, did Emil smoke something or did they hire a bunch of millennials?

Skyrims map was chock full of shit to look at, do, see, explore, even if the caves weren't always super interesting. When the map was fully explored, it was densely populated.

If you took the starfield 'map' (all of the planets) and stretched them out into cells and put those cells together to make patchwork quilt of planet maps, would the map be:

1) as big as skyrim
2) as densely populated as skyrim

If not, why not and by how much?

The problem isn't that the engine has 20+ year old code in it.

The problem is that the 20+ year old code in the engine IS NOT GOOD CODE.

Like I said before, IdTech and Source and Unreal all have ancient as fuck code in them. Every game engine in the market has old bits of code stuck down in the depths of it like old Quake code for physics or ancient audio codecs from Win 95 days and such. The problem is the Bethesda code isn't there because it is old reliable code tested by time and guaranteed to work, it is ancient spagheti code shit made to work with duct tape and spit that could and SHOULD have been updated to work correctly and revised into working order YEARS ago but never was.

It's the difference between a company still using a ancient storage cabinet built in the 1930s to store files because the thing is made of solid wood and metal and working fine, and a company that insists on still using Office 97 because it "just works" for writing documents even if it means everyone has to boot up their computers twice to open a VM to run XP on their Windows 10 PCs to type anything.

I will give credit where credit is due, making ships is pretty fun, it's just a shame we do fuckall with it.

Also they DID figure out how ladders work. Sort of.

Bethesda writing has been collossal dogshit since after Oblivion, stupid shit like that is small potaoes.
I expect an extremely bland and politically correct world and even blander characters.
That is not the draw, it is the sandbox part, and the jury is still out if that is good.
If anyone buys this and expects quality writing, may god have mercy on their soul.

The two most popular guides on steam are currently explaining how to do things in starfield that every other game has in its options. Skyrim had this problem too, you had to type fov 90 in console every single time you started playing or died because it always reset. What a joke.

>shoot some pirates on a moon
>get into a ship
>sit down in the pilot's seat
>hold space bar to take off
>immediately thrust into a prebaked takeoff cutscene
>in space
>learn how to pilot and shoot
>told to go to a moon on the other side of the planet
>mark the objective
>can see a blue square in the distance
>spend about 5 minutes flying in the direction before realizing I'm not going anywhere
>pull up the map of the solar system and press x to activate another prebaked cutscene to fast travel over to the moon
>arrive at the moon
>attempt to fly to the objective on the surface
>realize again this isn't doing anything
>have to pull up the map again and select a destination on the surface, whereupon another prebaked cutscene plays

This is retarded. Stop trying to be more ambitious than you are capable of executing. Be humble. And if you're not going to let me jump to light speed in real time gameplay, at least stop making me go through so many fucking cutscenes just to travel to the objective.

There are honest to god floating point precision issues, and I'm at a pirate camp right next to the landing site. look at the gun.
Good to see the Quake 2 engine still getting some work. After all, zenimax also owns id. We need more huge conglomerates. More industry consolidation.

Even the Russian guy is black, this is seriously ridiculous at this point.

Nope, apparently the whole "morrowind in space" thing was a huge lie, and a very OPTIMISTIC summary of the game.

It's fallout 4 in space, with the plot of skyrim, with the depth of Fallout 76, with the Dialogue of ESO.
Quite literally, everything bad about each game - distilled into one game in an attempt to emulate nomanski.
