I had some "pick me" behaviors in middle school and high school, but it was more frustration with women rather than seeking male attention. Most of the women in my life at that time were really feminine and cliquey. All my female family members were feminine as well and tried to discourage my more masculine interests. So I felt ostracized from other women and this came out like "well I think makeup and shopping are stupid!" I can't imagine how much worse I would have been if I had actually been regularly bullied by other women.

I grew out of that before graduating HS as any sane woman should. I wasn't "not like other girls," I was just "not like my relatives/classmates." You can't replace female friendships with male ones, so don't bother trying to put women down to get male attention even if it's non-sexual.

A lot of women I went to high school with that I felt the need to be “pick me” over got more mature as well with age. High school age really isn’t the best for a lot of women in female-female friend or acquaintance groups. It’s usually the time you feel the most insecure and you try and find ways to cope. Sometimes it’s in the form of “pick me.”

When you’re an adult, you’re more worried about more pressing issues than trying to stand out from other women. Many of the women I went to school with are now married, have kids, and are just trying to get by. Also, adulthood doesn’t give you as much free time to ruminate over how you’re different. It’s probably why most grow out of it by adulthood, but the ones that continue it are often have genuine issues with socializing, which usually just end up hurting both their professional and personal life.
