Not to scratch at the scab of the previous Kirkbride discussion, but

More than two centuries later, autists are still using their own blood to pay tribute to his cool-ass work.
Don't reckon ESO's literal pilfering of references to Lovecraft will have the same effect, but who knows?
Kirkbride fanboys really putting up a decent fight against Kojima fanboys for faggiest fans in gaming, it seems.

So after Starfield, who has even less hope for TES6? I'm not looking forward to single-piece armor sets, combat just as mediocre as ever, and even more essential NPCs, but I don't have much hope of that trajectory being averted after the brief hope spurred by Fallout 4.

I want Kirkbride, Kojima, and David Cage to collaborate on a game. I think they collectively have a shot at making a cognitohazard.

In Morrowind there's 8 armor slots (helm, curaiss, L&R pauldron, L&R bracer/gauntlet, greaves, boots). You can also wear clothing under armor.
In Oblivion there's 5 armor slots (helm, curaiss, gauntlets, greaves, boots). No clothing armor underneath.
In Skyrim, there's 4. (helm, curaiss, gauntlets, boots).

I love Skyrim but fuck me, it simplified alot, usually to its detriment.

Combat's fine. It works well enough. Nothing really bad, yet nothing really stands out. (For the love of God bring back hand-to-hand).

Essential NPCs are gay. NPCs should be protected from all outside damage (to avoid fucking with quests unintentionally), but should all 100% be killable by the player. No exceptions. Make for alternative ways to finish quests.

I liked the message Morrowind had about killing people who are essential to the story. It gets the point across that you screwed up, but it still gives the player the freedom to make murderous choices.

I remember Oblivion had a quest where you're supposed to meet a vampire at 2:00 AM. It's a trap and I got attacked by a group of necromancers, but the vampire I was supposed to meet was there too so he joined the fight. But I didn't know he wasn't a necromancer so I kept wailing on him with spells and stuff until the sun came up. I just figured he was a really strong necromancer. He yelled at me for being so stupid.

Another time I had to escort Martin and I think Jauffre to Cloud Ruler Temple and the two of them got in a fight with each other and couldn't die.

Regardless of how retarded the story and dialogue system was, it had acceptable albeit rudimentary looter-shooter gameplay, and it contained fewer essential NPCs than Skyrim. If Bethesda Took that core, ripped out the FO4 dialogue system and reverted it, and gave me looter-shooter (looter-slasher?) Skyrim 2 with fewer essential NPCs and limb gibbing, then I'd say it's pretty cool. So long as the side-quests & exploration were OK I could ignore the stupid railroaded main quest, like I ignored the stupid railroaded main quest the last time I played Skyrim (probably over five years ago, now that I think of it.)

I'm kinda in the mood to play skyrim again (I have the anniversary edition) but I'm not sure what mods I want to use. I simultaneously kinda am interested in trying shit like "Skyrim Extended Cut - Saints and Seducers" and "Legacy of the Dragonborn" but I also want to avoid vanilla content being drastically modified like with the Unofficial Skyrim patch which seems like an odd contradiction but it is what it is (and in all honesty the only bug you really deal with in unmodded skyrim is that bug in the blood on ice questline). Sorry for any potential typos, I'm a bit tired.

Legacy of the Dragonborn fits pretty well with vanilla in my opinion. Haven't tried the Saints and Seducers mod but I have it installed with a modlist I found built around LotDB, I need to find it again because its a pretty good base.

Unofficial Skyrim patch is gay and Arthmoor is a cuck, The solution to USSEP being required by everything is this mod:
Load it after USSEP, it undoes all the non bug fixes. The description is vague because Arthmoor is such a pissy cuck that he DMCA'd the previous mod that did this because it mentioned USSEP by name.

It's wild to me that for as simple as Skyrim and Oblivion are, there's still people you can see on youtube who are completely lost and overwhelmed by them. Even have some of these types in my friend circle.
They'll go into it expecting Witcher 3, but then constantly be confused and utterly lost on what to do or where to go.

The whole "ok you're outta prison now. Go do this, if you want. or you can fuck off and collect a billion forks and melons if you want. who cares, have fun retard" seems to just break people. They'd shit themselves trying to figure out morrowind or daggerfall.

And on one hand, its pretty cool to see people realize that this series gives you so much freedom especially compared to its contemporaries in the genre. On the other, it's no wonder they've made the games simpler with each new installment. People have become so accustomed to being literally hand held and told exactly what to do and how that something as simple as "go there, get this, kill that. Up to you how you get there and how you achieve this" while having a marker tell them where the destination is still overwhelms them.

But you'd think that with the success of fromsofts games and their morrowind like approach to shit, bethesda would see that theres still a massive market for that sort of harcore "figure it out faggot" approach and stop trying to cater to the dumbest nigger cattle consoomer. If fromsoft can make a bazillion dollars telling people to fuck off and git gud, so can arguably the biggest name in the open world genre.

The girlboss and nigger obsession at Bethesda has basically killed any interest I have in it. I fully expect every major source of power in the next game to be female led and 86 percent of all NPCs will be Redguards.
While I really don't want another game set in Hammerfell (had Daggerfall/Redguard already + would be a lot fresher to get a merrish PoV) at least in that situation, seeing Redguards everywhere wouldn't be jarring.

I'm wondering how they're going to be handling the Civil War plot from Skyrim in the future; given how things have changed, I can't imagine that the writers will be handling it with any form of tact, or logic for that matter. There's also the whole thing with the Aldmeri Dominion; how do you guys think they're going to be handling it all?

They can't decide on who won so they do another Dragon Break like Daggerfall.
"Uh well both sides won the war because the Dragonborn caused a Dragon Break when he clapped his ass cheeks on the time wound!"

Honestly I wish there was an option to unite both sides against the Aldmeri Dominion.

Probably something along the lines of the Dominion, after The Dragonborn ended Alduins threat and disappeared like every other protag, came rushing in now that there was nothing really standing in their way which reunited Skyrim against a common enemy or some shit. Or that the Dragonborn himself united skyrim against the Dominion after slaying alduin.

Hand wavey enough to not make a definitive statement on an either/or b plot quest, while also basically letting you headcanon which side was actually winning since neither the Imps or Cloaks had an advantage until The Dragonborn got involved anyway.

There are options for the Civil War that don't require a Dragonbreak simply because the war doesn't actually *end* at the conclusion of the Civil War questline as the Empire and Stormcloaks remain in the world regardless.

They could simply say in the history books that both sides traded victories and defeats, at various points gaining and losing territory and/or capitals. Tullius and Ulfric both end up dying during the war, and the new leadership either continues fighting to this day or come to some sort of terms to end hostilities for the moment.

Or maybe with the death of the Emperor, the legions were recalled back to Cyrodiil to deal with succession, or the new leadership decided that Skyrim was a lost cause or even that they decided to broker a deal to end hostilities.

Yeah, in the end I expect the choice won't matter like it always has in Elder Scrolls games but there is no need for a Dragon Break.

So I've never played an Elder Scrolls game but I'm interested in giving it a try. Which game would you all recommend I start with? I don't mind outdated graphics and clunky interfaces if the writing is superior.

As @Buoyant Armiger says, start with Morrowind (The Elder Scrolls III).

If you enjoy that game, I highly recommend Oblivion (TES IV). Maybe try Daggerfall (TES II) or Skyrim (TES V) at some point afterwards.

Morrowind and all its DLCs are available on Steam for 13 quid.
Steam page for Morrowind
It's also available on Xbox One/Series X/S/whatever through backwards compatibility. It's the original Xbox port of Morrowind GOTY edition, but it'll have significantly better performance/resolution compared to playing on an original Xbox.
