I have a friend who sits on a state's disciplinary board for attorneys and apparently people really only get disbarred two ways (1) misappropriating client money or (2) committing a felony.

Not even every felony. It can also be a misdemeanor. The usual language is "a crime involving moral turpitude." This would include fraud, rape, arson, murder, robbery, perjury, etc. It can also be things that aren't even crimes, like libel, although it would have to be extreme beyond belief.

In the Ninth Circuit, notorious California lawyer Stephen Yagman was subject to discipline for accusing a judge of being "drunk on the bench" and calling him a "Nazi" in a case he was involved in. The discipline was overturned on appeal. (He was later finally disbarred for a laundry list of felony convictions.)

You might also be suspended for drug and alcohol issues if they affect your representation of clients. For instance, showing up drunk to court. Usually you'd have an opportunity to demonstrate you'd gotten yourself under control and petition for reinstatement for that.

You could also make a real stretch of an argument that Nick was deliberately giving bad advice to Eric July while sleazily actually representing someone trying to wreck him. I think July made it abundantly clear, though, that he only takes advice from actual practicing lawyers.

Sounds like Rackets is safe for now, but who knows what's in store in 2024?

Another thing that bugs me whenever this topic comes up is that it seems like everybody makes a beeline for disbarment. There ARE other punishments for lawyers besides disbarment, such as censure, suspension, probation, remedial education, etc. If you're a lawyer, disbarment is basically the death penalty for one's career. It's to be meted out in cases of severe or repeated violations. Nick has no formal disciplinary history to date.
