My theory was that his church saw the things he said and the way he was acting and he was told they didn't want him to teach children literal heresy, or was just told he wasn't welcome at the church anymore as a result of his behavior. And because of his "ODD" he just decided to stop going altogether instead of being told what to do. He acts like an asshole and then the other person reacts to his assholery, and as a result he can claim he didn't cut ties, the other person/group did.
