Kelsey Grammer to return as Frasier in reboot of hit comedy - Actor is ‘gleefully anticipating’ the return of the comedy, which is being rebooted after 17 years

, the writers felt pressured to make Nixon's character Miranda decide she was gay all
the only one that pressured them was Nixon. it was her condition for coming back to the show. The only good part is the comedian because it feels like a madtv sketch only they made the douchy 2000s era comedian a woman instead. Seriously Che feels like a satire on one of the guys from Guy Code. The fact that she's also the co-host of Sarah's podcast doesn't help either. The only thing keeping me from believing its an intentional Rian Johnson move is that Che would have fucked all of them by now. Honestly Nixon hated her character as much as Patrick hated Picard, thats why they basically destroy her and her family during it. Blatantly treated her husband like shit.

@MirrorNoir

You know, I had watched the second episode and that additional background still didn't really click for me as a reason to stiff-arm your father so badly though. Child of divorce, he barely ever saw him anyway, maybe it's different when you don't grow up with your father. That bar scene was pretty good Frasier farce, but I wish he had someone else to work off of, that stuff only works when there's pacing and chemistry. Your Night Court point applies here, maybe the cast just isn't right or hasn't gelled yet, but shows don't really get three seasons to figure it out anymore.

I'm definitely checking out Night Court again on your rec - I was leery of how they'd do Dan's character so I didn't want to get too invested. In the first season he was more of a snooty Frasier type than a hornball. Wow, that show really got given a lot of time to figure itself out.
Night Court sucked. And they completely neutered Dan to the point that he's Jake Fielding.

Yeah, I brought up that idea about David Hyde Pierce to my wife since she's the only other person I can talk to about Frasier and she said it was an interesting thought but Cynthia Nixon was the one who made that call. DHP didn't hate Niles though, so I saw it more like he'd be pressured by other people to play him gay and that Niles left his family for Neil Patrick Harris, the real one or a character, doesn't really matter, they'd call him a Nazi if he didn't and it's not worth the trouble.

I usually gave whatever episode of And Just Like That my wife was watching at least up until something irritated me and I picked up a book, and Che was definitely the main offender. And whichever one Nixon's character's called was terrible to her family, so at least it was realistic; she ruined her family out of boredom and the they/them did it just because they could. The only funny one on Sex in the City was Kim Catrall, she knew to play the whole thing mega over the top from being in so many B movies and schlocky tv shows.

So the show was supposed to be Frasier and Niles running a small black box theater. until DHP said he didn't want to do it. That must have been the "there's an astounding enough idea to make me want to play Frasier again" that Grammer was talking about a couple of years ago because I was sure it wasn't the one we got.

For what it's worth Nu-Night Court is pretty good IMHO for a couple of reasons:

1. Melissa Ranch is a good actress and she has really good chemistry with John Larroquette

2. The show doesn't have the mass trainwreck casting issue that the original Night Court had where it took three seasons before we got the iconic cast

3. The evolution of Dan Fielding works well and avoids having the show shit upon Dan for being a Trump loving yuppie scum womanizer.
I... would not use the words "pretty good." I said this before in the Star Trek thread, but the problem with the Sequel is that no one knows how to be a deadpan snarker or a straightman in this show, so there's no use of uncomfortable silence or anyone reacting with mild annoyance. Everyone's got to talk all the time, usually Gurgs, mugging the camera to tell the funniest line in every scene. Everyone just comes across as pathetic in one form or another. Neil is an impotent simp and will always remain as such, the prosecutor (I can never remember her name) is effectively the new Dan Fielding trying to climb the ladder. Abra-Kadabra Stone (no her name is not short for Abigail) really does feel more like a defense attorney than a judge.

Also, the weirdos aren't that weird either.

The sad thing about Che on And Just Like That is that the character is tolerable as a foil for Carrie and even as a triggerhair type, she's more interesting than the token black women forced upon the show to deal with longtime criticism of the series being too white. But she has zero chemistry with Nixon and part of me is cynical in the idea that they paired Nixon up with someone they figured fans would hate, someone who was both a bulldyke AND used triggerhair pronouns purely to punish Nixon for forcing them to flush down the toilet one of the central storylines of the original series that fans loved IE her relationship with Steve.

And like I said, season two was damage control with the writers bending over backwards to deal with how they did Steve dirty and try and put him in a good place at the end o to mitigate how they fucked him over as they wrote him off.

Lilith was a whore who fucked so many different men that she didn't know who Freddy's father was (and Freddy's stories about his dad were based upon the ones Lilith narrowed down the list to plus Fraiser) and that Fraiser only recently did a DNA test to "discover" that Freddy was his long lost son conceived with said slut mom.
I don't remember Cheers but didn't Lilith actually cheat on him?

Yes but that was after Freddy was born. Though the guy she cheated on Frasier with turned out to be a psycho and later on she got with a volconio expert who left her for another man
Oh well then Fraiser calling Lilith a whore isn't unfair then.

The two of them had rebuilt a fairly stable and respectful platonic relationship by the end of the original run though, even after she did things like sleep with Niles.

Re: the “making Niles gay” angle, I don’t know if that would even fly, he was already practically a stereotypical effete upper-class gay in the original, who just happened to like women, and I don’t know if that portrayal of gay men is appreciated much anymore. I think they’re all supposed to either be fujoshi bait or “fierce”.

The third episode was much better, not so much Freddy in it, and it was a surprise to see a White man yell at a Black woman on TV. I always loved that about Frasier, how he didn't mind sticking to his moral code in the face of the likes of Dr. Mary or Cam Winston. I figured there would be any of that now. Freddy and whatever Niles' son's name is are as amusing as a popcorn kernel stuck between your teeth.

Yeah I'm happy the workplace comedy is back.

Again I'm happy just to hear Kelsey Grammar do his posh accent. Dude has still got it.

I liked the sketch where Fraiser is now essentially a Dr. Phil phony

DHP not coming back could be as simple as him not wanting to slum in a shitty streaming series, which is what this revival is. That might be okay for syndicated crap like Saved by the Bell and Fresh Prince, but Frasier was one of the top shows on network tv; it and the cast deserve better than some low-budget knockoff.
You're probably right. I definitely think Kelsey is getting paid solid money, you can't do the show without him. The other cast members are no doubt being paid peanuts.

Makes me think of Star Trek Picard, only in the 3rd final season did they get the funds together to bring the entire TNG cast and that turned out actually decent. Seasons 1 and 2 of Picard were both infamously bad by comparison.
