Back in the day, the only way to be famous was to pick a field and to excel at it. That was kinda hard and a real crap shoot because you're having to compete with everyone else in your field -- and there are always going to be scores of people who are smarter, more industrious, better connected than you are. But if you did break through, the rewards were great. People saw you as an expert in your field, You'd get respect and admiration -- perhaps money and career opportunities would follow.

The internet and social media changed all that. You didn't have to be expert or work hard to gain an audience -- all you had to do was be opinionated with a big mouth. You could comment on whatever bullshit happened at the time, and you'd gain an audience.

But that's not really enough for some people, is it? They don't want to work hard. Rather than doing the basic research it takes to have an informed take on an issue, they'll talk about themselves and their personal life, and cultivate those parasocial relationships for the free money.

Some people will love that. Most normal people will find it repellant. Whatever the audience take on it is though, it's something you've created for yourself.

And it's not like Rekieta wasn't warned. Repeatedly.
