The homebrews kinda wind down when he has actual booze in the house. If he's broke and nobody is sending him anything other that slopsauce tacos he's making booze out of french fries and catfood.
I'd wager the ABV in his various "meads" is only marginally above that of kombucha. When he has to drink his sugary bogwater its like a nice tolerance break where he can get placebo-drunk on his own pride at combining dehydrated bacon bits and oreos in a fermentation jug while his liver has a small rest.
