A Guide On Ratings/Stickers - What are ratings and what do they mean?

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Something I don't see mentioned is that the notifications were a great way to remember what you posted if you haven't logged on for a few days or a week, I'm not in the habit of going to "your posts" on my own profile since I've used the bell icon as a shortcut for so long. It's a much nicer way to return to a thread.
I really think that there are a lot of small upsides to stickers that will have bigger impact than Null realizes and the removal will reduce activity on the site a little. This seems like a case of "engineer purity" that isn't taking into account the value of human social dynamics.

Not getting rating notifications is Gay Niggers.

One of the hidden benefits of ratings is that you know if you made a good/bad post by the reaction that you get. If I get a load of "disagree" reacts on a post, that says to me that I got something wrong. If I get lots of "winners", that means that people like that kind of post and I should make more like that. If I get a load of "dumb" reacts on a post, that means that I am Wolfetone. It's a subtle but very effective way of encouraging good posts and discouraging bad ones. But I'm not going over all my fucking posts one at a time to see if people liked them or not. That is Gay Niggers and I won't stand for it.

But caring about your total is pretty stupid, ngl.

I can predict this will almost certainly lead to a stark increase in rage-farmers and negrate bombers shifting to "u dumb" post spamming as a consequence. SnailSlime-esque posters just want to ragebait and used stickers as the method due to how easy it was. Now we'll have more posts clogging up everything if stickers aren't a viable attack vector anymore.

When I told this to Null in genchat he said “GOOD. IF PEOPLE ONLY USE THE SITE FOR DOPAMINE IT SHOULD DIE”, or something like that.

He doesn’t care.

I know Null mentioned in the DM thread that he wants people to use other general sections of the site more often. He might not like it in some respects, but taking away this feature isn't going to help if he wants to drive up engagement with the site in general, especially to lesser-used areas.

I feel of feel like my posts go into the void today versus what I'm used to, there feels like a complete lack of engagement and I will just forget about every thread and not check it for other posts. I usually go to some relatively trafficked boards, as well. It will be far worse for seldom-posted subforums, as I know I won't check them after maybe an occasional subject catching my eye and the same goes for others.

Chat (and to a greater extent DM chains) I find to be both incredibly stupid and gay as AIDS, but I wouldn't advocate for taking down chat because people like it and it's popular. Probably a net gain for the site in popularity. The DM chains were a completely cancer because of unsolicited invitations, but I don't see how the previous fix implemented limiting it to 10 wasn't sufficient to address it.

What was this even implemented for? It's Josh's site so I respect the decision, but don't really understand this one.

Was there any old accounts sperging recently in the T&H thread about A&H "boosting" points? I remember ~2021 there were some prominent old accounts incredibly mad over the "unfair" scores people in the A&H section were racking up (in a chaotic world, more people were interested in the madness of our surroundings than the madness of some furry or fat woman, what a shocker)

I haven’t seen any such sperging. There are some oldfags upset about the removal of points and notifs, though.

Huh. Well, wouldn't be the first YOLOSWAG major forum change Nool has done, and likely won't be the last.

I'm guessing we're going to see a shift to farming YOUs (at least for the rage half).

Also, a downside is that the highlight system is going to get fugged up. It relies on score ratings and some magic regarding maximas to set a post as a highlight. I don't know about anyone else, but with this change I don't really feel any impetus to score posts anymore, personally.

gonna mirror this thought its a good metric to know if you've been a faggot recently and need to switch gears. I don't mind opening up the react page on the profile but I imagine a lot of people won't go out of their way for that.

Theres one giant mega thread in the T&H lounge thats for general discussion, its shifted to the sticker debate. Ive seen nothing like what you mentioned, but on any forum with a rating/points system, you will inevitably get some slapfights over it. Someone mentioned data usage and server load as a reason for disabling them, which could make sense if it wasn't for the fact that the site has a quarter of a million dollar war chest that can be used for basically anything.

Yes HHH was one of them. He bitches and moans about everything until he gets his way.

I agree with this post. :agree: It seems a little ridiculous to occasionally check your "Reactions received" every 20 minutes to see if people reacted to posts of yours. On the other hand it means that people can now freely give :drink: 👄 and 🎖️ (or 🦅) without needing to be a True & Honest Fan.
Had to rate you disagree fren, because I can't rate :drink:

Why is getting an alert on stickers gone? I kind of like them because it signals the thread is active.
Nobody knows, and I gotta be controversial here and say it's pretty bitchmade to have a message at the top of the forums linking to what became a massive thread discussing the new rules for group DMs but no announcement or thread about this, which is arguably a bigger deal.

Of course, it's 1 million times more bitchmade that people whined about stickers enough to get them taken away.

100%. I think Null fell for the 'iT's LiKe MuH rEdDiTt' meme and didn't fully think through the actual impact that the ratings have on user behaviour.

While the whole dopamine hit angle does lead to some reaction farming, and is a bit gay, I think that's an acceptable price to pay for the fact that ratings serve as a community controlled check on site behaviour. Now granted people who go into threads with the intention of purposefully shitting them up aren't going to be discouraged by a negative rating, but removing it isn't going to stop them either.

What it does help to stop are newfags acting like retards when they've already gone past their lurking phase. Some people just don't learn by observation so logging in one day and having a dozen notifications that their borderline fedpost was not well received, and seeing their score drop as a result, is a genuinely effective deterrent to stop at least some of them from posting shit.

I don't think we're going to see the proper consequences of this for at least a couple of months, but eventually I can see a situation where a lot of users who join from now are going to be acting especially fucking retarded as a result of them not being actively reminded of their own retardation.

I am sympathetic to Null in this, he often says that running this site is like herding cats and he's really not wrong. But he's just gone and removed a reasonably effective herding stick in his arsenal for absolutely no benefit. And all because a few furries were acting like gross faggots, as if that's something no one could have predicted beforehand.
