Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

Brain Powerd is super rewarding and satisfying to watch, though. It expects you to put all the pieces together and figure out what's happening yourself; it doesn't spoonfeed anything to you. Because of this the character interactions feel more realistic and engaging. The protagonist is quite likeable -- maybe even moe. I also like how the mecha, which are sentient, behave like animals rather than humans. The show does have some unintentionally funny moments, though, such as the "Orphan has become the 53rd state" scene (but that's mostly due to the music and the absurdity of the American livery). Think of this show as a weirder, fast-paced Turn A Gundam.
Idk about that. First quarter is boring and can even feel awkward or clumsy, second and third portion are more solid, last quarter is kinda contrived to me - rush ending doesn't help either.
It's good that the show touch upon on why characters behave like that, why they are mess up and weird in some way. But still... it doesn't feel impactful.
I probably will never ever get used to "space magic" and "ghost telepathy" thing.

The parts that I think are supposed to be comedy and emotional (entire backstory of Isami family generation), neither of these feel done well. They are more like, yeah whatever, lets move on.
Although, I find these two things are funny. How Iiko really cherishes her birthday gift from Yuu when they were much younger, only to have Yuu outright saying not remember at all.
Jonathan gets mocked by an orphan kid for his mommy issue (mommy milk), and only in next episode he taunts Yuu with "I fuck your mom" after "I fuck your sister" doesn't work.

I don't really find any prominent characters are really really likeable. The okay ones are Kanan and Rush, but they are like side characters. Hime is supposedly being the special one, but most of the time she's kinda lackluster, not really feeling emphasis on her enough.
Yuu, despite being protag and having character development, I still can't find him more interesting nor likable. Same thing to Yuu family members, his parents are just "Science" and his sister, Iiko, is just edgier than Yuu.
Jonahthan was amusing at first at the infiltrating on Novis-Noa, then just boring like a manchild wanting to prove something to his "new" daddy Baron.

Also, English dub is probably a much better experience for this one rather than Japanese VAs. I find Japanese Yuu isn't pleasant to listen at all, considering him being the protagonist.

Brain Powered rating: Mommy issue/10 or Dysfunctional family love/10.

Brain Powerd is an underrated show. It has a really interesting setting, Tomino going maximum mommy issues and some of Mamoru Nagano's strongest mechanical designs. It feels like a very natural evolution of a lot of Tomino's thoughts towards what makes for an ideal mother/woman and what a bad one is like. I really do love the cast and the atmosphere it has. Jonathan might be one of the most entertaining rivals I've seen in any anime.

Unfortunately, it's from an era where everything Sunrise seemed to put out was either a tad too short or a bit too long. I think it needed another 6 or so episodes to really flesh things out. I wouldn't call it rushed, but I would say I'd like some things expanded on.

What is it with mecha and mommy issues? It the cockpit=womb allegory so inviting?

At least it's not Bravern where the allegory is cockpit=another man's ass.

Tomino uses fiction to get his mommy issues out of his system. I think it’s probably due to being a post-war child with an overbearing mother in an era where it’s uncertain what direction your child would go.

It's different here because the cockpit is in the groin area, and when the door opens up, it looks like an erect penis.

All the mechs are referred to as "Boy" btw, and they have "Child" and "Adult" forms.

I just hope when Tomino goes he releases an energy wave that envelopes the universe, ending all war. Then we can follow him as the new messiah to the promised land.
In the Gigantis's Counterattack manga, Tomino exists as a Newtype novelist who was told the story of Ideon in a dream and wrote it as a warning to humanity, so that sort of does happen canonically in Gundam.

I've been on a bit of a Iyashikei kick recently having finished Yokohama Shopping Log and the 2 OVAs for it and I'm finally starting to get around to reading/watching Aria. For anybody who has gone through the series before, would it be better if I read the manga or watched the multiple anime series? The manga is complete (as far as I know) but I'm such a fan of the OP for the original Aria anime that I might watch it instead. If there's any reason why I should choose one version over the other please let me know.
Old post, but what did you end up doing here? I first came across Aria years ago but for some reason put off reading it. I finally picked up the first volume of the manga and watched some of the anime and both seem good. The manga seems like it might be a little better, but the anime looks so nice. And I'm a little confused on the different printings of the manga.

After about 2 years (has it really been that long? :stress:) I still haven't finished the series. 2023 was a relatively busy year for me and I don't particularly want to rush a series like this. I had just decided to go through both the anime and the manga as there are differences in both and I would probably recommend you do the same. I know the first season of Aria skips around parts of Aqua, the first volume of the Aria manga and the episodes are all over the place in the manga. (if you want a full chart of how the anime is ordered from the manga look here) The choice for manga or anime first is totally up to you, I'll probably do the anime because the OST is amazing sells Neo-Venezia better than anything else could. The first season of the anime was great and I would highly recommend it. The opening made me close to tearing up every episode, it really does stuff to you.

I was also a good chunk through the manga and I would recommend just finding the TOKYOPOP Masterpiece edition of Aqua and then going on to Aria. Listening to the series OST helped with reading a lot.

Kindov amazing how good the first half of Freiren was, and how much I couldn't really stay interested for the 2nd half. I liked a few of the half-episode plots and a few of the new characters, but (despite episode pacing remaining good) the story seemed to get sidelined. I also realized Frieren isn't actually a completed manga, so we aren't getting an ending this season... I feel deflated, and my tissue is spongey. I dug everything with Frieren and Himmel and the old crew, and Fern and Stark, and every demon, but that's it.

When they make next season there's plenty of more demon fighting coming up but Madhouse will probably toss it off to some junior animation crew and it'll look like shit :/

Man, reading the leaks for the newest Jujutsu Kaisen chapter bum me out. Gege's clearly got an amazing gift for fight scenes and battle choreography, but the last 20 or so chapters have felt really formulaic. Character enters, character surprises Sukuna with their power/ their technique/ their skill, character gets one hit in, character gets defeated in an anticlimactic fashion, repeat ad nauseum. Its especially egregious when he off screens characters after giving them flashbacks/ hallucinations. Its a shame that Gege cant contain his love for certain characters and the series has really suffered for it.

It's the 2nd least intresting read of the week for me after MHA. The other series in WSJ mog it unrealistically hard, the only good thing that recently happened in JJK was the meme fight.

Speaking of memes, this is another example of my point:
