Some people are just evil. It's like asking why John Wayne Gacy or Jeffery Dahmer or Hitler turned out to be who they turned out to be. You could try and point to all kinds of factors or reasons why, but other people grew up in horrible circumstances and were abused, etc. but they didn't turn into serial killers. Millions served in and survived the horrors of WWI and the aftermath, and these people didn't turn into megalomaniacal dictators. Nick is a bad seed. He's like the kid in Stephen King's Apt Pupil who discovers darkness and embraces it.I know this is the most attractive and guilt-assuaging answer (and probably mostly correct), but perhaps it is the optimistic in me that would like to find an inflection point--a clean break--where Nicholas went so... wrong. Why and how did it all work for long enough to take in so many who are now horrified.
Narcissists can often be extremely charming. It's a characteristic of their personality. A lot of entertainers and charismatic leaders are narcissists. I was taken in by Nick (and others) for years thinking he just had some odd quirks while I remained entertained. I lost track of him after the Depp trial, so I didn't realize how openly depraved he had become until recently. He kept that side of himself mostly hidden for a long time. Why were so many drawn in? How did it go so long and take in so many diverse people? Would we fall prey to similar again?
