Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

The worst part about the lack of merch is that there was definitely an audience out there for it. Many modern shows reach beyond their target demographics to people with a lot of disposable income. It's not that there wasn't anything, but it was mainly reserved for books and apparel.
I struggle to remember most 2010s cartoons even having merchandise. Adventure Time and Rick & Morty were pretty much the only one I can remember seeing anything for in commercial stores.

Regular Show had a small line that didn’t last very long. I honestly didn’t even know Gumball had merchandise other than some Six Flags prizes till recently. I think Steven got some Funkos you could find at nerd stores like Hot Topic. Hardly any of 2010s CN seemed to be sold, it was all really strange.

As for Disney, barring the films, I have seen some novels for Gravity Falls. Nickelodeon, literally nothing beyond Paw Patrol. Did The Loud House ever get merchandise?

The thing with animation too is that fans want merch, and creators would benefit from merch. But executives and merchandising companies won't even bother.

Hell with the whole thing of tax write-offs coming up, some suck-up mentioned shows would not be cancelled if only someone bought the merch

This tweet brought out many show creators and people experienced in the animation industry bringing up how little merch there actually is of their shows and with the mistreatment of animation where the creators have to pirate their own shows (Notable example being the Owl House creator).

Merchandise is barely made for modern shows same with any physical media because streaming and digital is the new business where they treat animation as just content and nothing more than that.

Dana? But she is a fucking failure in general.
If she doesn't suck Alex Hirsch's microdick ages ago, she'll never get the chance to make her own cartoon and failing miserably.
But she done sucking dick and failed.
Git gud, lmao.

Disney really doomed itself by not creating official TOH merch. Even Strange World got a little bit of something. This is why people choose Etsy or Redbubble.
In Japan they create a fuck ton of official merch like pins, bags, acrylic stands or plushies and people buy it. Characters from TOH like King and Hooty are easy to make money out of them and I have no idea why they didn't do anything.

Lesson learned, if you wish to work in an industry (which I still don't know why you would), do not be like Alex Hirsch or Dana Terrance

They drew nicely designed characters and made decent lore for their shows (gf and even toh initially) but they should have listened when people told them no or when disney (allegedly) gave them notes on what not to put in their shows. (I say allegedly because danna herself once said disney warned her to either remove or tone down the lgbbqrstuvwxyz crap in toh to the bare minimum gladd demands, or else they'd axe her show and her career...which they ultimately did. So who knows who was telling the truth in all that)

mr enter was right about one thing when you have a creator whos narcissism and ego are so over blown that they think they can do whatever they want without anyone to say no, or they believe that they dont havr to take no for answer, you get people like alex and Dana falling from grace and losting what little talent they had.

All those things ironically DO exist but as you said mostly on etsy and redbubble. Those sites rake in the green day by day by people desperate for cartoon collectable but don't care if it's not official. I'm honestly surprised (to the best of my knowledge) disney, Viacom, and other big media companies haven't tried suing redsty or buy them out to get a piece of the consoomer money they're missing out on.

I can't really think of a market for Western Animation merch. With Japan is pretty much having the Otaku conditioned to pay money for merch else their Waifu would be taken behind the barn to be shot. Western animation rarely has that much sell unless it's mega popular or huge brand. Even with good shows like Primal, I can't think of anything to buy besides a box dvd set, and I'm pretty sure almost no one has a dvd player.

Basically it's not just merch, but making the fans feel obliged to buy a ton of it.

Kind of hard to condition people if it is never put forward. In the case of Primal, a cool figure could be made. Samurai Jack sold out with its collectors edition figure for Battle Through Time.

Adventure Time also had a few Limited Edition figures to purchase. It is surprising how little Western animation dives into the high quality figure market. It has been pretty successful for anime and comics.

I think TADC, Hazbin, whatever else indie animation there is really did have the right idea by making plushies and Tees of their characters. Regardless of their quality, they seem to have the right idea over where the money's at.

"The serial killer is targeting men!"

Oh, I can already see where they're gonna go with this...
Incel wants to kill all the Chads to get his own harem since whores can't help but want dick, and if all the dick but his is gone, he can finally feel wanted.

Could also be a feminazi, but that was my first thought.

The fact that you actually see them in public, at least in places like college towns, seems to indicate they also probably serve an advertising purpose. If someone asks "what's that," they'll get an explanation from a fan.

Seeing as how we've reached another milestone 100 pages I think it's best to talk about another historic animation milestone. Cgi effects. Love em or hate them they've come a long way since the days when computers rendering of images was so limited it could only render wire frames in black and white. The first cgi images like the first animated images themselves are difficult to pin down. Computer renders have been found as far back as the early 60s such as this 3d model of an AT&t communication satellite I'm orbit dating from 1963. Just 6 years after sputnik became the first object to be launched into orbit.

Other early uses of cgi are found all thorough the 60s such as the first talking cgi "character mr computer in 1968
but it's application in film didn't take off until Alfred hitchcocks North by northwest became what is belived to be the first film to use computers to digitally render titles as opposed to painted title cards or painted frames. From there the early 70s saw attempts to design people in cgi...the results were well theres a reason it's called the uncanny valley.

Cgi animation really took off in the 80s albeit in small quantities. While pixar would love to stroke their ego amd claim Andre and wally b (1984) was the first full cgi animated short film that honor technically belongs to a 1982 French short film dream flight.
See you in another 100 pages.
The Robert Abel collection is straight up porn for technical animators, you get to go from complex film compositing to scanimation to early CG to combos of the three to being reminded TRW was a company at one point to making a sexy 3D femdroid just to advertise canned vegetables. it has to be one of the slickest and most well curated collections ever released and the fact it's trapped on Laserdisc is just sad.

I was thinking more that the writers are gonna do something like "Oh, you care more about this killer because he's killing men!" or similar shit. Knowing the writers it'll be ten times more retarded than that.
