Taking a look at the standings so far, I'm thinking the NL Central is going to be the division to beat. I think the Reds, Cubs, and Brewers all have a genuine shot at making the playoffs. The Pirates and Cardinals, while they may not be contenders now, have got a good young core of players that are hungry for some respect. I know it's still early in the season to really be caring that much about standings, but keep an eye on these teams.
NL East being dominated by ATL as usual, but the Mets are starting to look like a baseball team. Not a particularly good team, but a team nonetheless. Marlins are severely underperforming and that has been disappointing with the talent they have. Phillies are doing Phillies things, which means they'll be a middling second place finish and either exit in the DS or CS. Nationals seem to have made some improvements, but only incremental.
NL West has had a great rivalry brewing between the Padres and Dodgers. I watched their series this past weekend and was highly invested. After Will Smith calling Jurickson Profar irrelevant, you could see a fire in the eyes of the Padres. Not sure why you'd call a dude with 10 years in the big leagues irrelevant, but this is what happens when you open your mouth, Will. D-Backs haven't gotten into a good groove yet, but I'm hopeful they will be a playoff contender for many more years. Giants, congratulations on being a baseball team. Rockies, please clean your bongs because the resin is starting to turn black.
AL East looks like another dead heat like last year, except the Yankees are actually playing competitive ball. Juan Soto was a great acquisition and he appears to be much more invested in NY than he was in San Diego. Baltimore is doing Baltimore things and I fully expect them to have a deep playoff run. They also haven't lost a regular season series since calling up Adley Rutschman in 2022. Not gonna bother with Toronto or Tampa Bay right now. I feel terrible for the Red Sox losing Trevor Story for the season, but he's also approaching the tail end of his career.
AL Central has been the AL Central. I can't get too hyped about it, but I'm glad to see Cleveland have a winning record. The Royals have come out of the gate white hot, hopefully they keep it up. Tigers are slow burning right now, but I'm confident we will see them in second place for the majority of the season by the end of May. Twins are the Twins, I really don't pay that much attention to them. White Sox are, as always, a dumpster fire franchise.
AL West has been a mixed bag. Houston and the Rangers getting off to shaky starts was not what I expected, just like seeing an Angels team that seems to be playing with something to prove after the loss of Ohtani. The A's have won their last 2 out of 3 series, but I'm not going to put any stock in it until they can string together a competent team. Seattle, what is you doin' baby???? You've got a great pitching rotation and some serious contact hitters that can lay wood. You've got no excuse to be losing.
