I beat Kotor and 2 in April for the first time in years, doing every side quest and shit on light and dark runs. both hold up pretty well, but the first one is much better than the second one. now vanilla the 2nd one is a glitchy fucking mess that is obviously unfinished (but I still love it dearly) and modded it's much much fucking better and it's a shame they got force fucked into releasing it in the state it was. it still is better than 98% of modern launches. The only reason I think the second one isn't anywhere near as good as the first is I think the second one has a much worse pacing problem. it takes too long for the story to get moving and then it is totally backloaded and everything happens too quick, and the companions outside of Kreia or HK are boring and suck to talk to. it's still an all time favorite of mine though.
I started playing SWTOR after because it's my biggest Star Wars Legends blindspot. and a friend told me you can play all of the main stories for all 8 characters for free and they're all full campaigns and then you can pay 15$ once and cancel to unlock all the expansions if you want. im halfway through my first story in it. I haven't played a MMO in like 15 years. I have tons of complaints, but they're all microtransaction mmo faggot shit, or just regular mmo large scale game things like everything is very same-y design wise and you move too slow. I know what happened to revan and the exile from that book so I know what I'm getting into storywise. overall I'm pretty impressed by what it offers for free as a star wars game, and the fact besides the fact other people are running around you can totally just play it as a one player Kotor 3 if you want to.
I actually think they could take it whenever they close it in a few years and probably rework it into a crazy expansive budget single player game cutting out a bunch of bullshit and not locking what they keep behind arbitrary busywork or qualifications.
that being said it has made me think about old MMOs I played, or knew people who played or saw ads for or whatever and it's made me want to look at fan servers of finished ones and see what the fuck that is even like. I was pretty excited to see Matrix Online (which I played as a kid) exists in some form, then sad to find out it's just a walking simulator and you can't do dick in it. I downloaded Pirates of the Caribbean online which my cousin was into and weirdly enough of all games it seems to have literally everything available from when it was live but there is only like 20 people max on servers so it's a strange experience walking through an empty MMO even if it was just a kids game. apparently City of Heroes/City of Villains is like this too but has more of a playerbase. I used to fuck with Star Wars Galaxies heavy and looked into that a little bit but can't decipher what fan run version out there is what I would want.
it just never ceases to amaze me the sheer power of autistic attachment that keeps things like this around. in like a year or two when I finish casually and half ass playing through Star Wars Old Republic I might go back and check out more in depth city of heroes, or galaxies or that korean Dragon Ball MMO in their current states and see what it's like to run around a dead game and the type of people who still populate them.
I have had tons of fun fucking with people in SWTOR though it's pretty buggy and you can get stuck in the graphics easy as fuck, and there's a command you can type to move you, but it barely works. and the best part? it has a timer on it so you have to wait like a minute or two to try again. I came across some guy who was stuck and couldn't move and I could have force pulled or pushed him out of where he was and he was screaming into the chat he was stuck and the timed command wouldn't work and so I walked right up in front of him, then promptly got up from my computer, took a piss, made a sandwich, ate it, came back and he was gone and before I walked away he was back! this motherfucker logged out and back in and was still fucking stuck and my character just sat and watched him for 15 minutes, he logged out and back in, still stuck and I walked off to continue my game. lmfao shit like that is why I played MMOs as a kid and it's still funny now.
