Its the church Kayla's family goes to and almost certainly the one she was raised in. Church and the community associated with it as well as raising children in it may have been important a long time ago to Kayla. Or else it might have been important to her parents or the connection to sister & brother. Its worth remembering that they live where they live because Kayla is from there.

It was a LARP for Kayla's family and herself at one point. Kayla grew up in a very conservative and religious background (almost like Nick) but it seems that she did not retain much except for the trapping of faith (like Nick, again) and as soon as she found someone or something she liked better (than the children), she was more than willing to let her old supports all fall by the wayside (Sound familiar?) For all her doubts and worries she always had some kind of medication (or substance) to soothe the pain and tried to change here trad image and physical appearance to fit (Where did I see this?) her new conception of herself--or what others expected/

If you live in a small, midwestern town where your extended family also live and they happen to be very religious and all part of the same church community, there will be a lot of pressure from that family for you to also belong to that same church. It's more common now for people to be individualistic, to break away from churches, and then to go church shopping, but in small town America the tradition of belonging to a particular church and to a particular church community is still important to a lot of families.

Even if you're a free-thinking, fedora (and baldo) wearing internet sceptic libertine, when it comes to family relations, it might be easier for you to keep your doubts private and to retain your membership in your family's church. My guess is that Kayla stayed at the church because of extended family expectations, and Nick stayed because of the pressure on Kayla.

Divorce would only be a stopgap solution to the problem. While it's clear that they both have a hand in enabling each other, the issues stem much deeper into who they are as people.

Separation is only step one to the solution. It is going to take years of psychiatric help for the two of them to have the chance to become stable human beings. And in Nicks case, I have a little faith that he even wants to change for the better.
