So, like, I've had the same desktop since 2002, which has been upgraded piece by piece over the last 22 years, with probably the only OG part being a HDD.
My laptop (2080 RTX card) from 2019 is starting to struggle with newer games, so I'm looking at updating the desktop but I'm a bit lost in a world where $2000 graphics cards are the norm.

First step...is this mobo still usable today, or do I need to build it all up from the start

Got some high end (for the time) i7 in there, and was hoping to just be able to drop a graphics card in for immediate boost.

Your 14-year-old CPU isn't going to keep up with modern games, either. Time to upgrade.

It's from 2018...I thought most games are CPU rather than GPU dependent these days.
It depends on the type of game, but generally the GPU is the limiting factor since "muh graphix".
There are some notable exceptions which are CPU bound (due to their nature, not because shitty optimizations), such as Factorio which has a lot of stuff going on in the background.

As a general rule, yes, but the newest CPU that motherboard can handle is an i7-970, which was released in 2010, unless I am missing something. There are newer games that will definitely struggle on something that old.

Welp, looks like you're right and time just flew by. I guess other shit was upgraded but not the MB/processor.
So new MB and processor time then go from there.
Is there a big gap between MB's these days? The 'gaming' ones seem unnecessary tbh

I suggest getting a good quality AM4 motherboard (last gen AMD). Otherwise you might have to get something kind of sketchy if you don't want it to be expensive. You'll probably have to buy all new RAM too, make sure it's tested to run with the motherboard you get. Get at least 3200 megatransfers per second, AMD Ryzen really needs it.

How about this? Anything stupid dumb here...looking for it to deal with gaming needs for the next 5-6 years.

GIGABYTE X670E AORUS MASTER
Ryzen 7 7800X3D
DeepCool AK620 Digital White
MSI GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER 12G GAMING X SLIM
Kingston FURY 64GB KIT DDR5 6000MHz CL32
EVGA 850 GQ Power Supply
NZXT H9 Flow Black
SSD Kingston FURY Renegade NVMe 2TB

GIGABYTE X670E AORUS MASTER
that's top of the line, you really need something on that level? you can get a b650 for a third of that price.

one thing I noticed lot of AM5 seem to come with wireless, whether you want to or not. gigabyte apparently has models without it, but I've never seen them anywhere.

64GB of memory is overkill if you are just gaming and the cooler with a display is expensive as fuck for zero benefit over other coolers
Cooler is gone. I just thought it looked cool :D

I dunno, I just picked what was ranked as good on Toms Hardware. Do I really miss anything with a B650 other than numbers on benchmark tests? Yea...all this shit is just numbers on a spec sheet at the moment

This is overkill. Get a ASRock B650M Pro RS, it's cheap and has Wifi 6.
DeepCool AK620 Digital White
Peerless Assassin 120 is cheaper, but if it isn't available in your region, then the AK620 is fine. Don't get the one with the display.
Kingston FURY 64GB KIT DDR5 6000MHz CL32
You don't need 64gb for gayming. 16gb is fine.
SSD Kingston FURY Renegade NVMe 2TB
Personally I would go with a Western Digital SN850X, but Kingston is fine.

RAM's gotten finicky, you can't really expect two different kits to work right in the same system under overclock, especially at the speeds he's talking about. I wouldn't under-spec it. I'd rather go down to AM4 than have 16 GB. I have 64 in one of my machines, probably going to go to 128 then transfer the 64 to a machine that has 32 in it currently.

The ran is like 250 bucks. I have 64gb in my laptop just because I can...and it was cheap. Unfortunatly a 2080 in a MSI laptop with a busted keyboard doesn't cut the mustard anymore. And yea, Nvidia really need to stop naming laptop cards as the same as their desktop models.

Eeer two more retarded questions.
I have a Fractal Design R5 case which looks nice and pretty; this can be reused right?
Also a Corsair TX650 Powersupply? Reusable or old and shit?

Live a little and get the fancy shit. Also, Gigabyte seems to be more reliable than Asrock.

There haven't been any significant case innovations since the R5 aside from the newer USB specs. Reuse.

I'd upgrade the PSU, get a 750w Seasonic or something along those lines.
