I will say I like how One piece inverts what Hollywood would have done. Last chapter was a blast, I miss these more "adventure" chapters and as a believer that chopper ahould have been the last straw hat (though I still like all of them,but the loss of focus hurts) it's great yo see the og crew fucking around.

Also, heard Oda is taking a 2 week rest.

I'd love it if Oda did a Gear 6, but just Gear 5 shenanigans. It looks like Luffy's turning into that all-haki black edgy form, but then you see Gear 5 just painting himself and is all "Ah, out of paint. Nevermind!"

I don't watch any One Piece Youtubers, they're all morons stating either the blatantly obvious or the blatantly insane, and their sole contribution is sponsoring theory cults to laugh at like ZKK and Raid Will Fail. The only reason I like One Piece Podcast is because they have enough clout to conduct interviews with animators and localizers and even have Stephen Paul as a regular fixture.

If only. People are positive towards the design of SSJ4 (about the only thing everyone likes about GT). Plus, Gear 4 was the one based around SSJ4 anyway.

On Bleach: Read the manga (it is better) until Ch. 479. Then switch to the TYBW anime as it is the definitive version of that part of the story (Kubo had health problems around that time and was forced to rush thing because of his wrist).

Given how long running Shounen endings are infamously shit and end up relying on a lot of deus ex machina or arsepulls, him having now a gap where the anime is taking a break and he can also take time to write the final arc should be good. In a way he’s kinda already started down the path that leads to most of these arsepulls being needed - the final boss/bosses have setting breaking powers (5 elders for one). Here are some examples.

Bleach - Oh shit I have made this final boss kinda omniscient, can break Ichigo’s Bankai easily - I guess I will create this arrow that negates his power so he can kill him.

Naruto - shit I made Madara too powerful and skilled to kill satisfactorily, so I’m going to remove him as a threat by this rabbit moon goddess who is as powerful, but not experienced so they can seal her.

Fairy Tail - complete nakama rubbish asspull.

And so on. Maybe having a bit of time and hopefully avoiding this is a good idea. Also he had many threads to pull together. WG and 5 elders, blackbeard, shanks, where the fuck is that last road poneglyph and who is this black ship etc.

Honestly, that has been talked to death: rushed ending due to health reasons. I personally reserve my judgement for the definitive version of the fight in the anime. Uryu being a silver bullet for Yhwach was hinted in the manga near the start of the arc but did not see development due to Kubo 's health at the time. Still, the story has a second chance and I will wait to see.

Naruto - shit I made Madara too powerful and skilled to kill satisfactorily, so I’m going to remove him as a threat by this rabbit moon goddess who is as powerful, but not experienced so they can seal her.

Naruto doesn't really have bad ideas, just bad executions. I stand firm by that assessment. All the problems about it could have been fixed with just a few corrections here and there.

I liked how they won against the body of Acnologia but the mind was indeed just the power of friendship. Still, that story continues but personally I am not watching anymore due to other reasons.

Honestly, all the talk of “edgy” comes down to 1. Gear 5 being based on Sun God Nika, a guy who played the fool to make people happy, and 2. Luffy’s carefree attitude and obviousness to the reality of the real power he has, along with his obliviousness to the grander endgame beyond something simple like “save Robin” or “save Ace”. And this is coming from somebody who thinks that the treasure on Laugh Tale is something that’ll give Luffy some kind of power boost.

Sorry for bringing this up all the time, but I just keep going back to Whitebeard’s speech at Marineford, and how it’s made pretty clear that Luffy is most likely this prophetic individual Whitebeard is talking about. Yes, the person bearing the weight of history to challenge the world to a fight that’ll consume and change the entire world…is a dense, simple minded, thick headed dumbass.

It’s like there’s a spectrum of heroes, and Luffy is on one end, and somebody like Frodo Baggins is on the other end.

Given how long running Shounen endings are infamously shit and end up relying on a lot of deus ex machina or arsepulls, him having now a gap where the anime is taking a break and he can also take time to write the final arc should be good. From what I’ve seen, everyone has had complete faith that Oda will stick the landing, mainly because he has an ending (panel and everything) and the man plans to stick to it. That faith sure is something.

The one thing I like about One Piece as a battle shonen (more adventure) is that bad match ups do happen. Certain characters get fucked by the other being literally a perfect counter (Akainu, wouldn’t be as bullshit if it was just he burned hotter to consume the oxygen and forced Ace’s Logia form to cancel out or some shit).

I do like when a series gives a shit about type advantage to force a protagonist to run away or use the power of friendship (a friend throwing a punch to the back of someone’s head) to counter the counter.

Well, to be honest, the 5 elders didn't feel like that hot shit. Certainly durable, but I never felt as threatened by them like with Big Mom or Kaido after their introduction.

I also think it's less "Oda needs to plan" and more that he's just very worried and aware of his health. The guy is about to become 50, has 5 to 10 years left of material in his head and works in an industry that burns people out in a few years. He's certainly getting to the point where he really should not force it. Also probably doesn't help that Jump has NOTHING right now outside of One Piece, Sakamoto I definitely enjoy and has good numbers but that Blue Box, a slice of life, romance sports manga (can't speak of it's quality, just it's genre) is one of the top series in the Shounen Jump, known for a ton of battle series, really draws a picture. So I can imagine Jump is putting pressure on Oda to keep it going and him going "no, thank you, my health is more important" or something of the sort.

Sounds interesting enough. And considering that we’re about to go on a long break, seems like a good chapter to stop on before stepping away.

@ShitLurker Well, Gear 5 being a goofball is the Sun God factor since that god was said to act like a fool, along with Luffy’s general carefree attitude. I have to imagine that any further power ups and how they affect Luffy will depend on whether or not it’s analogous to some historical figure like Joy Boy. Otherwise, it may be like the other gears where Luffy is in a state of “alright, no more playing around. Time to kick this guy’s ass.”

As for the Gorosei, I have to wonder if what happened on Egghead just Oda doing what he did at Marineford in an attempt to show a preview of what Luffy has to go up against in the future. That or the Elders were caught on a bad day.

As for Oda’s break, it could be both health and planning. Dude is about to turn 50 and he’s talked about how he’s got the ending down pat and sticking to it (unless somebody in Japan is able to predict it, I doubt that), so it seems it’s a matter of being able to stick the landing and tying up all the loose ends when Luffy discovers how they’re connected and not a moment sooner than that (at least that’s what I assume Oda is doing).

Besides, if anything happens, I believe it’s been said that the higher ups at WSJ and Toei, along with every editor Oda works with, knows about the ending (and most likely got an NDA to sign) so there’s a contingency plan if Oda can’t keep going for whatever reason.
