Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

After an hour of trying my darnedest, I learned that the printer was apparently so old that MS no longer supports it in Windows 10 and the manufacturer stopped publishing drivers for it long ago.
This is where Postscript-capable printers are nice, since you can just use "Generic Postscript" as the driver, no matter how old the printer is.

Kia managed to one-up their stupid capacitive touch controls for putting both infotainment and HVAC controls on a single bar, by putting a 5 inch HVAC control screen between the cluster display and infotainment display in the new K4 and EV9:

And while the temperature, fan speed, and mode controls still have buttons, the touchscreen being between the steering wheel makes it annoying to use the touchscreen for controls, since turning on defogging and switching recirculated/vented air requires that you use the touchscreen. The touchscreen placement also makes it much more difficult for the passenger to adjust HVAC settings with it.
Can't speak for the EV9, but I've rode the K4 and the defrost and recirculated/vented air buttons are still there. The former is suppose to be on the left below the hazard lights. For the latter at the right side where the picture cuts off. For whatever reason this doesn't show it.
My biggest complaint with the car and modern cars in general is getting rid of the speedometer/tachometere in favor of a digital one. I can imagine that these things will likely go out before the car itself does, and I doubt it would be cheap to replace. Otherwise it's not a bad ride.

One thing I envy Eurofags on is how common manual cars are. They're nearly extinct in America at this point and I hate it.

Just like how CD players are disappearing from cars, auxiliary audio ports have also been disappearing from cars as an audio option. It coinciding with the removal of headphone jacks from smartphones is not surprising, sadly. That leaves AM/FM radio (although there has been talk about auto makers possibly removing AM radio), Bluetooth for phone pairing and audio, USB drives to play music (which have switch from USB-A to USB-C now), and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. (although there are some new cars that don't have that feature, namely Teslas)

One other annoying feature that can be harmful to cars is cylinder deactivation, which is added by auto makers to try to squeeze out every last bit of extra MPG to meet tightening fuel economy requirements. The baffling part about this is that Ford included cylinder deactivation with their 1.5T 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine, meaning that it can run on only 2 cylinders, but cylinder deactivation adds stress to the engine, and is prone to the usual computer glitching. 3-cylinder engines as a whole not only sound bad when they're revved, and vibrate significantly while at idle, but they've always been on the unreliable side too, i.e. the Ford 1.0T 3-cylinder EcoBoost issues, cylinder deactivation on the 1.5T will lead to issues in the future, and Nissan's 1.5T 3-cylinder VC-Turbo being under NHTSA investigation due to engine failures.

We're past the "1 tickbox away from signing away your rights" into "by looking at our website we retroactively revoke your inalienable rights "

How is this legal? I get it in the US the companies can literally forbid you from helping your relatives during a natural disaster, but I'm accessing this from the EU.

No privacy laws have caught up to how shit works online unfortunately

Before Current Year -- or at least before 9/11 -- I think the future at least most people in the West expected was a bright and optimistic "retrofuturistic" one where tech can do amazing things, but the "tech paradigm" was still the same as back then: no "smartphones" or "social media", and any future internet worked in a "Web 1.0"-like way.

The future that this world of Current Year got instead was one where everyday tech is still pretty much like back then, aside from electronics. Seems new electronics always have that "enshittification watered down smartphone" feel, there's oversaturation of touchscreens and "smartphones" and "social media" -- and of course the internet getting increasingly centralized, "smartphone"-like, full of advertising and scams, and censored. And that is not even getting into political and "society" trends of Clown World...

tl;dr: future kinda sucks so far

Speakers. It seems like everything is moving to portable bluetooth speakers that have batteries in them, or wireless soundbars. They sound like ass even when going over a 3.5mm connection. Want a set of computer speakers by a reputable brand? Well good fucking luck finding one.

Like seriously WTF is this? Harmon Kardon used to be a brand I trusted. But this just looks fucked.

I got a JBL Charge and it fucking sucks. The natural EQ is trash. I tried fucking with different EQ settings and just gave up because I hate it's sound.

Only companies I recognize that puts out speakers that don't look fucking retarded is Logitech and Klipsch. The Klipsch Promedia 2.1 is the only one I consider to be an option.
Edifier is another brand that has some good monitor style desk speakers. Anything more and you want a dedicated AV receiver to drive home theater style boxes.

Too many restaurants and stores rely on apps. Which the have you create accounts that you just stay logged into.

I miss when technology felt REAL, with cables, physical buttons, cd drives, and skeuomorphic interfaces and shit. Then mobile shit became popular overnight and now everything is a flimsy black-boxed little panel with a finnicky touchscreen that's impossible to make precise movements with, that you need to download an app and/or sign up to a service to properly use, while also having no illusion of warmth or tactile feedback. Maybe I'm a purist, but a phone is not a computer, god damn it, and they shouldn't downgrade anything else to sell that idea and accommodate them.

Exactly. When a computer is like a desktop, you can physically see and interact with it. You can understand how everything works and troubleshoot when problems arise. Computer literacy is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down among zoomers simply because they are given little boxes they use but don't understand. Consumer tech is turning into a series of walled gardens, and your only option is to pick the one you live in.

Recently had to buy a new phone. Went with a smartphone since my befuddled arse gets lost on a daily basis and needs GPS, and I like the conveniences of having a local music library and a camera to take photos of silly things and people who matter to me.

EVERY FUCKING PHONE is massive now! How is a 5 inch screen considered small?! My old S4 Mini was the perfect size. I picked the phone I have now based on the size and the hopes that it'll last six years like the S4 mini did.

The excitement and theatrics of software installation.
What happened to installation wizards? The few times I've used Windows in my life, the only thing to look forward to was installing software that way and getting to have daydreams of white-bearded wizards casting spells and fighting the dragons and fairies in my computer while I wait. And on Linux, manually compiling things is fun because I get to look at the fast moving lines of text and feel like a 1337 h4xx0r. Maybe I'm just easily entertained.
I will never say app or even application. It's program.

What's the point in making it bigger if, no matter how big you make it, it can't compare to a PC when it comes to actual productivity? It doesn't have a keyboard and you can only go so far before the screen is just ridiculously and unnecessarily big (the line hasn't been crossed, rather trampled in the last few years). Isn't the whole point of a mobile phone to have it be comfortably transportable and convenient? That's negated by the fact you can't put it in your pocket anymore, and even if you can, because it's just a rectangular glass pane, it's probably very uncomfortable and constantly hitting against your thigh.
Is it so you can maximize your dose of low quality slop on the social media?

Challenge accepted.

I used to want to have something like this to be able to do shit remotely on my phone with SSH and stuff. These days I just don't care.

I did have one of the original Android phones with keyboard. That was pretty cool.

This looks pretty elegant. It would look even better with one of those custom ROMs ((?) i don't do smartphones sorry) people talk about. It does seem convenient for doing stuff remotely but not much past that; I can't imagine myself personally needing to do anything on this that I can't just wait and do at home at my computer.

Here's a big middle finger to Steve Jobs - keyboards weren't that inconvenient or clunky and you don't really need a bigger screen.

I hate those fucking things. If I wanted a goddamn tablet I'd buy an actual tablet. Instead they're selling these pieces of shit that are too big to be a practical phone and too small to be a practical tablet. Who asked for this shit?

I wish I could get something like a Blackberry Torch with a modern OS.
