Elon is loose with his money. Ever since Sheldon Adelson died a few years ago, the GOP is looking for another megadonor who invests hundreds of millions of dollars each election like Adelson. Musk seems to be that guy for now.

The myths about Musk, his supposed intelligence, and his business success are overstated. Musk did not design the Teslas, nor is he even a founder. Teslas themselves are problem-ridden cars. Teslas are cool for hyping up electric cars, but electric cars as a whole are a flawed concept. Enough annoying, accented, bearded soydems or some combustion engine enthusiasts will tell you why in their long essays, but the crux of their arguments is true. As a car, electric vehicles can never outperform combustion engines in terms of reliability and cost, and as a sustainable transport method, they can never surpass public transport.

SpaceX is cool but overhyped. Musk was not the first to make reusable rockets, it was never considered impossible and was done decades earlier. In reality, reusable rockets aren't all that impressive even a successful landing leaves the rocket damaged and in need of repairs, limiting the way it can be designed versus single-use rockets. SpaceX is cheap relative to NASA, but that's also because they are burning money and not making a profit on many of their missions. There are other competitors in their price category so their cheapness isn't even that unique.

He's a good propagandist, but plenty of former higher-ups say he's a below-average CEO. Everything with the vibe as an "Elon forced this through" idea, like the Cybertruck, the tunnel, and now those weird robots and vans, are all riddled with problems and are not profitable. A CEO should be involved, but he should also know when to delegate and not interfere in areas where expertise is required.

In the end, he has a knack for marketing his products and creating markets, which will eventually be filled by more intelligent and better-organized companies, like Tesla and electric cars.

Musk is a skilled marketer. People like the idea of the “great man” theory and Musk has done a good job marketing himself as an IRL Tony Stark. His autism is generally considered charming in its own fucked up way because true geniuses have been portrayed as wacky autists over the years. Musk plays it to the hilt.

His best skill though is that he knows how to kiss the right ass. Those who will push more lavishly funded government contracts onto his plate, those who will never give him more than slaps on the wrist for gross negligence or violating safety laws. He knows Trump is going to give him whatever he wants and when he sees the winds shift, he will abandon Trump and go elsewhere. He was a big Obama and Pelosi simp a decade ago and got rewarded for it. He’ll get rewarded for going with Trump. If a Democrat wins in 2028, he’ll suddenly become more “libertarian” again. It’s easy to see through this bullshit.

Zeng, who met Musk when he visited Beijing in April and has talked to him often, said he agreed with the Tesla founder’s view on the potential for AI-powered autonomous-vehicle technology.

Tesla’s self-driving tech relies solely on cameras and AI in hopes of building affordable autonomous vehicles that can sell in large volumes. Its competitors are mostly building more expensive vehicles with layers of redundant technology, for safety, and using them to operate taxi or delivery services.

“He’s all in,” Zeng said of Musk’s strategy. “I think it’s a good direction.”

But Zeng said he had told Musk directly that his bet on a cylindrical battery, known as the 4680, “is going to fail and never be successful.”

“We had a very big debate, and I showed him,” Zeng said. “He was silent. He doesn’t know how to make a battery. It’s about electrochemistry. He’s good for the chips, the software, the hardware, the mechanical things.”

Musk and Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.

Zeng said he had also asked Musk about setting unrealistic timelines for the rollout of new vehicles or technologies at Tesla. He said Musk had told him that he wanted to motivate and focus Tesla staffers and that anything beyond a two-year time frame might as well be “infinity.”

“His problem is overpromising. I talked to him,” Zeng said. “Maybe something needs five years. But he says two years. I definitely asked him why. He told me he wanted to push people.”

Musk last month promised to deploy fully autonomous versions of Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y next year in Texas and California, and to release a two-seat “Cybercab” robotaxi, with no steering wheel or pedals, in 2026. The prediction prompted skepticism from investors who have heard Musk promise self-driving Teslas for about a decade.

Zeng did not refer to any particular unfulfilled promise by Musk, but said: “He probably himself thinks it needs five years, but if you believe him when he says two years, you will be in big trouble. The direction is right.”

This is the most accurate analysis of Elon. His ideology is always aligned with what might give him the most validation.
