Avowed - Obsidian's new game, like Pillars of Eternity meets Elder Scrolls

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
A new deep dive video was posted here on the Xbox YouTube channel. Also, several youtubers have put out videos this week based on a preview build they have been given access to. I like how the gameplay looks in those previews. The biggest concern mentioned (aside from pronouns, more on that later) is performance. Given the game isn't out for another 3 months and performance optimization is one of the last things to happen to a game, I am not really worried about this.

The ESRB rating for the game will be Mature according to the Xbox and Steam store pages for the game. This is the same rating as the other 2 Pillars of Eternity games.

The only thing that interests me about this game is that judging by the footage, it is using similar engine to Outer Worlds. If it's a medieval equivalent of that game and it won't make me puke with DEI shit like Veilguard does, that's good enough for me. I haven't been following this game, I have not been hyped for this game, I have no expectations. I am ready to be pleasantly surprised, or I can drop it without a care.
Some things to consider when comparing Outer Worlds to Avoved:
Carrie Patel is the game director of Avowed. She also was director of the Peril on Gorgon DLC for Outer Worlds, which I consider to be the best part of the game. Carrie Patel also worked on the other 2 Pillars of Eternity games so she is very familiar with the franchise.
The writing was the worst part of Outer Worlds and I am guessing Megan Starks was most responsible for this. She no longer works for Obsidian. The narrative lead for Avowed is Robert Ransom Lo whose most recent writing credit is for Call of Duty: Vanguard. He also did narrative work for Jinx, Yasuo and Zac in League of Legends (which isn't in his MobyGames). Robert Lo is probably a better narrative lead than Megan Starks.
Both games are using Unreal Engine. As long as there hasn't been a lot of turnover at Obsidian in the last 5 years they should be better at getting the most out of the engine than when they made Outer Worlds.
If I had to make a prediction, I would say Avowed will be a bit better than Outer Worlds. If it sucks no big deal, I can just uninstall it and play something else on Game Pass.

The game have pronouns.
Maybe this is the reason why they didn't allow content creators to show footage of the character creator in their videos. This has me wondering if pronouns are a mandate from Microsoft Game Studios since Starfield also had pronouns. This could be the developers checking a box in a list of requirements instead of inserting it into their game because they actually care about pronouns. Maybe someone who tracks woke games could comment on if Microsoft is putting pronouns in all their new games?

Are those really the Avowed 'devs'?
I never understood the point of those images. Obsidian has more than 100 employees, so those might be the only women and faggots there and the 90+ everyone else is white/asian programmer, but then why exclude those people as if it's Soviet Russia? If I had worked there I would have felt insulted that those people were chosen to represent the team.
I think that was a PR picture for International Women's Day featuring the women who worked on Outer Worlds. The size of the whole team was around 80 people.

I'm sure Matt Hansen is a sane and healthy individual.

Matt Hansen being an unhinged retard on social media definitely isn't a good sign, but I don't think he could fuck up the game that much since he is an artist and not a writer or narrative designer.

You know...can I just have a fantasy game that isn't completely gay? Can I just have some fantasy that is me and my bros hitting orcs with various sharp implements and nary a sodomite in sight? I know that's problematic because orcs are now black people for some reason, but I just want something that is just normal for 2008. No vitiligo, no bear sex, no genderfluid shit, no pronoun shit, just something free from current year.

I was kind of interested and now I'm not. If they do the pronoun thing, then there is going to be tons of other things that have slipped in, that will just irritate me and take me right out of the setting.

I mean, it depends on your tolerance for weeb shit and I apologize for the Ken-sama moment, but I really think your only current option to get that is going Japan.

So, I am watching Shillup's video on the game...they literally just put you in Emerald Vale again for the tutorial section :story:
Gameplay isn't that far off from OW either. Hell, I think I recognize some EV assets being reused. Yeah, this game isn't beating the similarity comparisons to Outer Worlds.
Honestly, the gameplay doesn't look that bad. It will definitely need a de-woking mod tho, and I just don't see there being an active enough modding community for this game to happen.

Edit: looks like the cut backgrounds feature from OW is being put into the game. Should make things interesting, and should hopefully have more impact than their equivalent in Starslop. I spot a similar dodging/dashing mechanic and focus on companions that OW had, looks like they can potentially revive you like it's a co-op game?
Character creator being embargoed is giving me a bad feeling. There might be vertigo(or whatever it's called), top surgery scars, amputee options and other modern day cancer Obsidian and Microsoft don't want you to see.
Surprised to see that there is a little bit of pushback against the pronouns and the insane comments made by the art director in the comment section of the video. I wouldn't expect that, there is only a couple of people defending this insanity too. Usually these kinds of comments would just get buried or downright deleted. Hopefully people won't forget about this at launch.

Incomplete game that end in a reddit level monologuing.
Alpha Protocol
A game everyone hated for being buggy and a story that is all over the place, but now """old people""" (30+) remember it in a good way thanks to it being part of their younger years.
Fallout NV
THE OG CUCK SIMILETER!!!!
Who you going to pick?!
- The bad guys, the writers hate and didn't even badger writing more then 2 quest for. (The original "Everyone I don't like is a NAZI!!!!! REEEEEEEEE)
- The "Good" guys, that are so retarded they loss too spear faggets.
- The reddit "I'm so smart" that for some fucking reason can't run NV by him self and need ex-tribals to do it.
- The "the player is too retarded note making everyone his enemy, so we going to give him an unbillable YES MAN"
Fallout NV is why reddit is reddit.

Pillars of Eternity
Never played it, everyone I know IRL said it's boring and gay for fish.
I really wanted to like this one buck in the day. the boring companions (that you needed a paid DLC to get companions quests for). the endless "women good, smart and strong! need no man" shit. and just the world itself is boring.

Still stand by what I said. Obsidian was never and will never make a non-shit game.

Wad Dungeon Rats really an rpg? I thought it was more combat focused?
It is combat focused RPG (I consider combat system and encounters strong point of Iron Tower Studio) that used same systems and setting as AoD.

All of the Ys games are fantastic, the demo for Nordics was really good as well as exceptionally long. One of the better still running ARPG series atm.

If I remember correctly about Tyranny, the issue with the game was that there was no ending and the last act was shit, which seems to be the universal issue of modern western RPGs.

I wouldn't say Ys is heterosexual as mych as Adol-sexual, including a good chunk of the men.

Oof. That's what I feared and you made it sound even worse.
This is gonna fail more then Veilguard for the simple fact it has denuvo, making run like ass and cant be pirated.
They aren't getting any wins this week.

Here is your answer -> The studio must follow Microsoft's Product Inclusion Framework which is a guideline of DEI and wokeness at its worst.

The lastest from Elon Musk VS Matt Hansen :story:

I'm honestly shocked this Hansen fag hasn't gotten the shit beat out of him, I know the title is on gamepass so it doesn't matter but he basically tanked the game. Even ITT people were fine being neutral about the game until he started promoting how woke the game is and then the usual suspects started going after him.

Imagine being this guy's boss, especially now. He made sure a game that would have released right at the start of the trump administration has this massive stigma attached to it
As much as I dislike Musk, it's really funny how he makes these people seethe and self-destruct purely by existing.
Honestly it reminds me of what Robert Downey Sr was trying to do with Putney Swope, and African-American lucks his way into a place of power and caused so much seethe because instead of being an empty suit like people were expecting he actually does shit.

The only difference is that unlike in the film, the African American is a white guy and he makes people seethe because he believes "you can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal"

Is that why Thunderfoot has such a hate boner for Elon? I don't remember him much from my own anti-musk days of the mid-2010s

This post from the director wasn't in this thread. From the Asmongold video.

I don't understand how people who are such self hating people white people can exist. Of course it's bullshit or he'd give his job to BIPOC or some shit. This is going to be another HR game like Veilgard. Say what you will about Baldur's Gate and the gay shit in there, you have to at least genocide a group of people to get past the first act.

>very real "survey" scale only goes from 5 to 10
I see they're selecting for retardation on purpose from the very beginning, even with biased surveys.
It's this fucking thing. As far as I can ascertain, it's entirely made up with no actual data available. It's a non-survey even if it wouldn't be designed to push a specific point. ((They)) love making these for their corporate friends with their thinktank circlejerk, apparently. Getting a quote on VGM and asking about the sources of their data (specific groups surveyed) would be a very interesting journalistic move.
