Dozens of people have died after a passenger plane crashed with 67 people on board in Kazakhstan, local officials say.

Authorities in Azerbaijan, where the flight originated, say there were at least 30 survivors.

Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 caught fire as it attempted to make an emergency landing near the Kazakh city of Aktau.

The plane was en route to Grozny in Russia but it was diverted due to fog, the airline told the BBC.

Video verified by Reuters news agency shows the plane heading towards the ground at high speed, with its landing gear down.

Seconds after it seems to attempt to land, a huge fireball erupts.

The airline said the plane "made an emergency landing" about 3km (1.9 miles) from Aktau.

It took off from the Azerbaijani capital Baku at 03:55 GMT on Wednesday, and crashed around 06:28, data from flight-tracking website Flightradar24 showed.

There were 62 passengers and 5 crew members on board the Embraer 190 aircraft, the transport ministry said.

Those on board were mostly Azerbaijani nationals, but there were also some passengers from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.

Out of the 25 known survivors, 22 were taken to hospital, the emergency ministry said.

Unverified video footage showed emergency services pulling people out of the wreckage and survivors crawling out.

Both Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have launched investigations into the cause of the accident. Embraer told the BBC it was "ready to assist all relevant authorities".

The BBC has contacted Azerbaijan Airlines for comment.

The aircraft involved was an Embraer E190, the Brazilian company is a smaller rival to Boeing and Airbus, it traditionally has a strong safety record.

A bird strike wouldn't cause that much catastrophic damage and it's an unusually high altitude for a bird strike. They suffered issues at 9000 feet. It's lunacy.

I don't know much about missiles but wouldn't these hit around the engines since that's the hottest part of the aircraft. I still really doubt that there was an engine failure since that combined with 3 system hydraulic failure would kill everyone on board. You also don't see fluids leaking out of the aircraft prior to the crash or really much external damage and I really think the cabin is too calm for that. It's weird either way I don't know.
It's likely they had engines and were trying to fly on differential thrust, looking at the flight path data posted earlier I don't think they would have been able to just glide that long. As for hydraulic fluid- I've never worked on an Embraer but the similar Bombardiers I'm familiar with pressurize their hydraulic systems to ~3000 psi and a catastrophic breach would have drained the system fast

As for missiles it depends on the guidance system and approach aspect. Radar doesn't care about heat and modern IR missile seekers can easily see the entire aircraft, not just the engines, and will angle for whatever provides a hit. Even the $1500 hunting thermal I own can see a human hundreds of yards away, an IR missile made this century should be able to see and hit an aircraft from any angle

Thinking about this incident always gives me a swoop of anxiety in my gut. It's one thing for a cataclysmic failure to instantly rip you from life, but to be stuck in a minimally controlled aircraft for half a fucking hour building suspense... Guh.

And once again, tail riders live to regret their choice to fly.

Worst way to die.

Gimme the chair, drowning, cultural enrichment... anything before floating round at 5000 verticle meters for an hour.

Radar homing and command line of sight guidance(usually slaved to a fire control radar) are far more common in that part of the world.
Well my confusion is they don't focus towards the center, front, or back? It wouldn't go for center of mass, wouldn't the wings give off more of a radar signature than the tail?

At that altitude the AA system that would carry the hit would be medium to long range AA. From a few dozen kg of TNT equivalent to a few hundred in the warhead. The missiles would attempt to get as physically close to the target as possible and a proxy fuse would detonate the missile when close enough. That close enough can be almost 100m away from the target and it can still kill a plane with that much margin of error.

I don't think it was a shoot down but Russia is #1 world wide champion at shooting down civilian airliners. No one else can beat them.
Meh… Only happened like once. Stupid japs deserved it anyways, pilot was a retard and flew over sensitive military sites in the Soviet Union.

VVS did nothing wrong and thought they were shooting down an American spy plane.

Ackshully...

For the record, I am very skeptical that this was a bird aircraft strike hazard (BASH) event.

Part of what makes me skeptical is that in the video from inside the cabin, it sounds like the engines are still running, whereas in the "Miracle on the Hudson," it was apparently terrifyingly quiet inside the plane. I also don't see how shrapnel from a blown engine wouldn't go either directly sideways or straight back, but I'm not an engineer so what the fuck do I know?

I do know, however, that geese (and other birds) can migrate at crazy high altitudes. Birds migrate over the Sierra, the Alps, the Andes, and the Himalayas, among other mountain ranges.

Apparently a plane once hit a vulture at 37,000 feet!

So it's theoretically possible that it was a bird strike.

In summary, fuck Putin.

Fuck you all but especially you for going up and beyond mere Russia bad retardation.

Five crew members and the black box has been found so just wait until the investigation.
Guys, I think we need to set up a Gofundme so Feline can finally move away from NYC and into Russia after all these years cheerleading for them, we need to harness that holiday magic and make the miracle happen all right it's clear she really really wants to live there and not a nice house in the NYC area.

lmao you're too jew to put up a dime.
