OFF - A nice game for cute children

I love a 2 hour long extended fight against a hallucination Marty where the game beats you over the head with how men are evil. My favorite.
Fuck me, is that actually in the game now? I've heard that the changes to the original content were pretty minor, but not that they added in shit that actively made it worse.
Guess I'll just have to pirate the old version.
Edit: Or I would if I could fucking find it. Everyone just says to buy the Definitive Edition on Steam and revert to the earlier build.

Yeah they added a 2 - 4 hour long superboss in Pain Mode for LISA that adds in so many retcons it makes Star Wars look well written.

I want to have hope, but when:

1) The dev is French

2) Apparently a chunk of the OFF fandom swears up and down Batter and Zacahrie are gay

3) The dev has acknowledged 2

I am sweating a bit after seeing Toby Fox involved, I confess.
Yeah it sounds it's dead on arrival. At the very least the fanbase of the original will be drowned out by trannies and their grooming targets.

The dev is actually Belgian, lol.
Also Toby is delaying Chapter 3 and 4 until he can learn French.

Personally I'm just worried that characters like Dedan will be toned down like in the shitty fake 3.0 translation (Use https://ivynivek.itch.io/off-fd-translation instead)
I too hope that Alias returns.

Oh God oh fuck I can see it in my mind's eye:
The new content leads to an ending where
The Batter discovers his true feelings and decides he doesn't want to end the world so he can live life with his gay lover Zacharie.
Please let me be wrong.

I love OFF. I wasn't aware theres new stuff happening. Not very eager. The game is timeless almost. A relic. All we wanted was a steam and maybe console release untouched. Not this dogshit. Fuck them. Now there's going to be normies who treat the defective edition as the true game like LISA tards. You either love off or don't care for it and its perfect enough as it was. The game was 5-8 hours and did not need anything added to it. The OST also made the game what it was. The new track is so generic and not at all what the original was going for. Now it sounds like generic 2010s youtuber backing track music mixes of old songs instead of an actually ethereal and atmospheric OST. Its not as DARK as it should be, its far too bright and chill sounding.
In almost all of Alias's work there is a vibe of unease among the serenity and beauty.

If it were 2015-2018 I might be excited. Not so much now, Toby has his own style and its far from Alias Conrad Coldwood.

Alias still has it by the way. They should have got him back.
RoyBudd EXP is an excellent track that showcases the specific way classical-ish music was sampled. It's far from whatever the fuck that new trailer music is.

In short, Alias Conrad Coldwood IS OFF. OFF is nothing without his work. It's like how they watered down the LISA ost. It's like if Nintendo had to change the Mother 3 ost just to get rereleased (they will due to the sampling).
All of the deep and bassy percussion and all of the brilliant sampling, the beautiful ambience Alias is known for will be erased from the new tracks, which make them less impactful and unique.

Supposedly each Zone's battle theme is going to get progressively darker according to Mortis Ghost. I haven't seen the original source for the claim, just a Reddit comment claiming so:

I believe this on its face mostly because that's the only way the Zone 1 theme cheeriness makes sense, but it also makes more sense to move heaven and earth to get the original OST back so who knows what's going to actually happen.

Seems like this remaster wants to try and build up a bait-and-switch aspect with the game starting cheery and becoming more dark instead of being OFF from the start.

That ruins the atmosphere of the game imo. Its just another demake trope of trying to outdo the original while failing. I prefer feeling uncertain in the beginning, and a reveal that the world is not as it seems, far more dire and then YOU'RE THE REASON WHY ITS ALL FUCKED. It was a little Lynchian and surreal. Its not exactly a creepy game, its more of a very moody game. Earthbound's odd moments scaled up with inspiration from Silent Hill. As always in gaming we seem to have gotten a Monkey Paw situation.
"We want OFF on steam and consoles!" For almost 20+ years.

And now we "got it" with the catch that it will not be the same experience for newcomers and it is the polar opposite of what we actually wanted for newcomers. I wanted a port, a translation. The simple graphics hold up, but a few additions may have been nice. Now its just bloat to justify the price and its fucking fangamer of all companies to work with. This is why I stopped making wishes for games.

Just imagine how much they'll ruin the Brain Plague tracks...
Sorry Toby and Mortis but there's no way in Hell you'll ever be able to pull off this kind of mixing.
Hard as Hell to top perfection, we are going to get sidegrades at best. Tender Sugar was a missable optional boss track btw. Reminiscent of Silent Hill 1.
I have zero faith in modern music mixing for these to be properly recreated. Only pale imitations, I know its cynical but OFF was so unique among the earthbound ripoffs with its presentation that even a small change can pretty much cause an entirely different tone of the game. The OST is a part of the game's soul, one of the main reasons people even remember the game. The soundtrack has kept this game alive in our memories, without it OFF would be a far lesser experience.

I'll wait to see the game before doom posting. The trailer looked fine, and it was mortis himself that contracted Toby after the original composer declined to be a part of the new release. There's this trend of dismissing anything new as being pozzed, and I won't stand for it. Plus, the original will always be there anyways even if the new one is trash.

I agree, I'm just trying to explain what I think the remake is going for. I personally don't think trying to emphasize the bait-and-switch works very well since the dialog and characters are all off-putting from the first time you see The Judge's portrait, but the remake crew seems to want to double down on the "nice game for cute children" subtitle which to me was supposed to get you in and fall away immediately.

The new music also sounds a bit too "clean": the crunchy, gritty SNES-like aspects of the original soundtrack were an important and intended part of the experience to me. Maybe the crunch is added in later tracks, but I think it's better when every track has it.

I'll wait to see the game before doom posting.
While there's already worrying signs and choices that I disagree with, I'm in the same boat overall. I'll have fun enjoying it if it's good or making fun of the state of modern remakes if it's bad.
