I assume this question is asking "how retarded is he now vs. his pre-substance abuse retardation level?".... But....

We are discussing that level of damage without considering the additional damage that withdrawal would cause. That is what makes this question interesting. It also, to some extent, makes the question impossible to answer. The damage that alcohol withdrawal does is significant. Many severe alcoholics don't truly decline until they stop drinking. The idea of looking at net damage to date minus the withdrawal damage is intriguing.

But let's say we can freeze-frame the damage, remove the addiction / intoxication and measure a baseline of window licking. I would argue that sober 2025 Cobes is significantly more retarded than basement dwelling or first apartment era Cobes. How much is hard to say without having seen him truly sober in some time. I am going to say his ability to day to day tasks has been impacted significantly.

Since this is an impossible (but interesting) question, I would also like to consider what state he would be in now if he went through medically supervised withdrawal. I think it would be similar to the hypothetical in the sense that he would barely be functional. In some ways I think him being constantly drunk makes us write off or ignore his cognitive decline as just intoxication, vs. Permanent damage from intoxication.

This is a spectrum.. But yes, to directly die from they body's response to a lack of alcohol you have to be severely dependent. These are people who need to be on IV alcohol drips and sedated.

However, someone can easily die due to the stress on the body caused by withdrawal. You just have to be in poor physical health and have the right factors align. Diabetes, cardiac issues, renal impairment, infections, etc play a huge role.

We don't know what comorbidities Cobes has. He certainly isn't healthy, but no one (including him) knows exactly what else he has cooking in the background.

Tldr; Cobes dying from straight alcohol withdrawal is unlikely. Cobes declining rapidly from any given medical event is plausible.

IV alcohol isn't a thing or at least it hasn't been for a long time. You either get benzos or barbiturates for detox, which may or may not be IV depending on the setting. Cobes definitely wont be nonfunctional after withdrawal. He'll have a rough 3-4 days and then he'll be at a slightly below base level for a couple of months

The beetus has a series of risk factors, and our boy has them all. He is completely sedintary, he drinks every day, he smokes, he eats mostly processed food high in sugar and trans fats. He has only recently started to put on the pounds, and that's another risk factor. I would bet he has full blown untreated type 2 at this stage, which left untreated has some pretty horrific long term outcomes.

I guess if he ends up with one or both feet amputated we'll get a peg leg or wheelchair saga. Of all the Clint Bad Dad tropes, not forcing him (somehow) to get a yearly blood test and getting him on a drug regimen is probably the worst. His alcoholism isn't tragic enough for a quick crash and burn, but untreated beetus is one horrific ride to an early grave, and it's not sudden. I feel sorry for the boy for what's likely to come.

It can't even be the heat of whatever tiny bit of hot sauce he had on that monstrosity since he was red before even trying it. I'm just gonna step out on a limb and say the diabetes is coming in nicely toobs. Since (PL) I only have experience seeing it on diabetic family members. Don't worry pancreas we got a new batch of meeduh coming up on deck in the next few weeks.

I see the road Cobes is on, I'm very familiar with it. The only thing that can save him is a good friend. He needs a reason to be sober, even if just for a few hours a day. But I think Cobes will live what's left of his life isolated from everyone, like when the family dog knows something is wrong and crawls into the darkness to be alone before the inevitable. I'm sad there's nothing anyone can do, he doesn't read donations and thinks anyone who tells him to choose life over 3 weeks wearing the same cloths, drinking every day, all day and eating 7 day old fast food troll orders, he thinks they're troles. The problem is, he has insulated himself to the outside world, meaning that the desire for change would need to come from within himself. I do not think that will happen. Pray for Cobra.
