Nintendo Switch 2 - For the Soytendo consoomers to speculate about the successor to the Switch, recently announced for 2025.

my reaction to the Switch 2 direct:

Been watching Treehouse stream today.
New mario kart looks like alot of fun
New Metroid looks great even though i’ve play only an hour of Prime 1.
Donky Kong does intrigue me. Certainly looks great.
Not sure why Nintendo wants to charge for the game that demonstrates the Switch 2. Should be included for free
This wheelchair basketball game seems like it would be a fun party game.

The Welcome Tour thing is hilariously titled, given that it's the most unwelcome thing consumer-wise they could've done. Apparently it's only like 5 or 6 dollars, but it still should have been free.

they are showing gba online, doesn't this shit stutter like ass in multiplayer like the n64?

these prices are making emulation look extraodinarily appealing.

I hope a pirated Mario Kart World has a good online.

given that it's a simple hardware revision ("simple" meaning a direct increase to computing power rather than a fundamental change to the hardware architecture), it's doubtful they've made any serious changes to the system software or BIOS, meaning the current Yuzu forks should already be 90% of the way there at launch. the main obstacle will be, I imagine, a possible revision to the way game decryption is handled. but if they do change that system, I imagine it would only apply to Switch 2 exclusives, since the system is hardware-based and thus can't be remotely changed on the original Switch models that are already out there. it's entirely possible that Switch emulators will be able to play Switch 2 games on day 0, which would be hilarious.

the more I think about that DK game, the more I'm kinda not vibing with it. To be clear, the game looks OK. Especially rewatching the trailer with my expectations managed, it looks like your typical Nintendo A-Team effort. It just doesn’t feel like Donkey Kong. It feels like a 3D Mario with Donkey Kong painted over it. Maybe that’ll change as more is revealed, but as someone who grew up with the DKC games I think I’m justified to feel a little pissed that they’ve made a clear step so far away from that aesthetic and cast.

"TOKYO EPD HAS A DIFFERENT VISION FOR DK; DK IS JUST IN NEW HANDS NOW." - Soyboy Nintendie, probably

Imagine if the same thing happened with Mario? Imagine if they gave Mario to Retro Studios or Platinum Games or something and they revealed that the next mainline 3D Mario platformer was an ultra realistic, steampunk neo-noir and Mario also has been fully redesigned, and Bowser’s not in it, and there’s no sign of Luigi, Peach, Toad, or even a single Goomba, and Nintendo is so committed to neonoir steampunk Mario that this new design even follows him into the next Smash Bros. It’d feel off, right? You’d probably be confused and maybe a little upset that the established tone and design of the franchise from the last 40 years has been upended?

"ODYSSEY - "

No, Odyssey is not an example of this because for all the weird new things in that game, it still retains the overall aesthetic and tone Mario has always had. The unique elements like New Donk City and the T-Rex feel like intentional departures from the norm, meant to stand out and make you go “Haven’t seen THAT in a Mario game before!” But if Mario were redesigned to look like a New Donk resident, and the entire game was him jumping on skyscrapers and fighting T-Rexes, I imagine you’d see a similar reaction.
I've been watching gameplay on Nintendo Treehouse and Cranky is in the game. He still has his Returns/Tropical Freeze design which doesn't really gel as well as it could with DK's new design IMO, but I don't really hate DK's new design either.

Looking at the mario kart 8 footage from the treehouse shit, stinks of feature creep. I get they had to 1 up 8 so they added the open world shit. even the driving everywhere thing would be fine but I can not imagine a worse feeling thing than trying to play open world bing bing wahoo and the courses being connected feels like fluff and filler to reuse assets.
the main thing with mario kart is that grand pres are quick to finish in one play session, the way having the interludes makes it alot less able to just play in bursts or practice
