What's the point of chip damage when BLOCKING? You're punished for being defensive in a fighting game?
I actually could see what they tried to do.
I think what the devs wanted was to implement a way to de-emphasize the usual turtling you see in Tekken. You take white health damage on block, and you recover it by landing an attack. So I believe that it's to force the player to panic when it's too low and force an offensive action. This has always existed in Tekken, like punishing a -5 or something poke from a block with a d,f+1 and backing away and making space.
But you can see the problem already. One, it's
forcing the player to make an offensive action in a series where defensive actions are
far more rewarding. And it does so by trying to make the player panic mash instead of making a well-thought-out decision. And two, this
already existed in Tekken and didn't need to be doubled down on. Tekken is about waiting for that opening and using that to turn the tables of the match, then hitting that flow state and bodying the opponent. But the player has a
wait for that moment. The devs are trying to force this exchange, which doesn't work in a game where getting my shit sidestepped, for example, leads to me getting launched into a ridiculous wall carry in Tekken 8.
That's my personal problem with this patch and the way the devs handled it. What they should have done is add more and better defensive options in the game, and introduce the offensive actions slowly to better balance the overall game. Remove fucking chip damage because that's too fucking retarded to exist, and find ways to reward defense and offense equally. Take a gentle turn into the newer mechanics, not a hard fucking left, which is what Harada and Bamco did.
